Executive Order on Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs Through Federal Sustainability | The White House

What does the Executive Order signed by Joe Biden yesterday mean for the US Federal government buildings portfolio? It commits them to:
1) Use of 100 percent Net-zero carbon electricity by 2030, of which 50 percent electricity to come from local, clean renewables
2) 50 percent emissions reduction in the Federal building portfolio by 2032, and a Net-zero emissions building portfolio by 2045

Harvard University will divest itself from holdings in fossil fuels. The university’s endowment of almost $42bn already has no direct investments in companies exploring or developing fossil fuel reserves. Legacy investments in private equity funds with holdings in the fossil fuel industry, constituting less than 2% of the endowment, are in “runoff mode” and will end as these partnerships are liquidated. bit.ly/3qkxlcG

Emissions Gap Report 2021

The UN Environment Programme Emissions Gap Report 2021 reminds us that annual greenhouse gas emissions “must be halved in the next eight years” to keep global warming below 1.5°C in this century. Net-zero emissions pledges could limit warming to 2.2°C if implemented effectively. However, many national climate plans delay action until after 2030. In the short term, reduction of methane emissions from the fossil fuel, waste and agriculture sectors could help close the emissions gap. Carbon markets could also help slash emissions, but only if rules are clearly defined and target actual reductions in emissions, while being supported by arrangements to track progress and provide transparency. bit.ly/31L2ufk

With climate change intensifying and scientists warning that humanity is running out of time to limit global warming to 1.5°C over pre-industrial levels, 2021 has been a fraught year for the planet. The Emissions Gap Report 2021: The Heat Is On is the 12th edition in an annual series that provides ...

Today, Nov 11, is dedicated to Buildings and Cities @COP26UK. In the biggest commitment made at the COP, announced by Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan who was confirmed as the C40 Cities’ new chairman, “More than 1,000 world cities vowed on Tuesday to halve their emissions by the end of the decade and go carbon neutral by 2050 as local leaders sought to seize the green agenda from national governments. A total of 1,049 cities or local councils representing 722m residents have signed up to C40’s “Race to Zero” campaign and will “pursue ambitious climate action”. Why have we received more requests for our benchmarking and energy consulting services in the last month than in all of last year? Driving this demand are the DC BEPS regulations requiring existing buildings to shape up or pay a fine. The area of buildings that must benchmark also reduced this year to 25,000 square feet. Building owners are receiving letters from DC's Department of Energy & Environment and giving us a call. A great example of local policy driving climate action!

COP26 Virtual Built Environment Pavilion will be available online from 31 October-12 November at buildbetternow.co. COP26 is dedicating an entire day to Cities, Regions & Built Environment (Nov 11). As the IPCC report stated, “ if we can cut global emissions in half by 2030 and reach net zero by the middle of this century, we can halt and possibly reverse the rise in temperatures." In developed countries, this indicates mass retrofits.
