I have no opinion on Lindsey Graham’s sexuality. Truly. As a conservative, it is such a non-issue to me that I almost wonder if some people expected us to clutch our pearls over the speculation.
I don’t care if Lindsey Graham was gay. I don’t care if he wasn’t. What bothers me is the idea of trying to “out” someone after they’re gone, especially when that person is no longer here to speak for himself and tell his own truth, whatever that truth may have been.
Maybe this is my Gen X showing, but I was raised in a time when outing someone was considered incredibly disrespectful. Coming out was supposed to belong to that person. Their decision. Their timing. Their story to tell, or not tell.
Lindsey Graham had decades in the public eye. If there was something about his private life he wanted the public to know, he had every opportunity to share it. If he chose not to, I think that deserves respect too.
And frankly, the strangest part to me is watching people who would normally condemn outing someone suddenly treat it like fair game because the person was a Republican.
If he was gay, so what?
He’s gone. He can’t answer the rumors, correct the record, explain himself, or tell his own story.
Maybe we can just let the man rest.
