Recorded message of good wishes for Christmas and New Year 2021 by H.E. George Vella, President of Malta, for Maltese living abroad

Fellow Maltese,

Despite the physical distance, and the time you have spent away from these Islands, you remain close to us both in thought and in our hearts.

I am therefore pleased to take this opportunity to share these few words with you and wish you and your loved ones good wishes at this very special time of year.

Perhaps few expected that the situation in 2021 will be very similar to that of 2020. I admit that, like many, I hope we find a speedy and lasting solution to overcome the adverse effects of the pandemic. It however seems that this virus will continue to pose challenges that will keep changing and will likely last for a long time.

I appeal to everyone to listen to the advice given to us by science and to follow more closely the advice of professionals, including precautionary measures, such as vaccinations.

I believe that international cooperation, especially between affluent and less affluent countries, is crucial for us as one global family to move forward. Despite the geographical distances between us, we all remain committed to achieving the 2030 Sustainability Goals and ensuring that we leave no one behind.

Without detracting from the medical emergency created due to this pandemic, I am optimistic about the new year and wish for a better balance between the health challenges and the protection of fundamental human rights.

I must mention all the workers in the medical field and salute them for the determination and resilience they’ve shown over the last few months as they have continued to be heroes for us all.

Ladies and gentlemen,

As this year approaches its end, I am all the more convinced that the events that continue to shape our country cannot be viewed from an isolated perspective, but in a regional and international context.

The effects of climate change, the humanitarian emergency which is becoming serious in some parts of the world, and the levels of inequality between the northern and the southern countries, continue to sustain an unfair system that is causing harm to our planet.

The sale and trafficking of weapons, especially in war zones and countries fighting extremist forces, continue to hamper our collective efforts for peace and unity. I appeal for more countries to recognise the damage caused by militarising politics and to ensure that international law is used as a tool to safeguard fundamental rights and not as a weapon of extermination.

I welcome the COP26 climate emergency talks held in Glasgow a few weeks ago. Through dialogue and mutual respect, these discussions show an international family that, although embracing many political divergences, is ready to work together to find a solution.

It is this dialogue-based unity that paves the way for a positive and lasting change.

Through my Office, I have also worked hard to strengthen dialogue between different sections in Maltese society. Despite the restrictions, I am pleased to say that during 2021, I chaired several conferences addressing national unity from different aspects. The Conference for National Unity held in February, the Conference marking 100 Years Since the Granting of the Constitution in April, and the Conference on the State of the Nation in June, were important initiatives that brought together many different organisations, experts, and academics.

I am pleased to share with you that preparations are currently underway so that in March 2022, together with the Albabtain Cultural Foundation, I will be organising the second World Forum for Culture of Peace. Through international participation, this forum will serve as an important platform for discussion and a global catalyst for further building a culture of peace.

I invite you to be part of the local discussion as well and, through various opportunities, to get closer to the current affairs of the Maltese islands and to kindle in the younger generations an interest and love for the Maltese culture and language.

I am very fond of the latter as it is the most living expression of our nation and it continues to serve us in the best way, despite outside influences and new technology. Few people can boast of a unique language that has continued to evolve over the years.

I understand that many people have suffered greatly because they could not travel to Malta and experience the warm embraces and the joy of meeting family members. Although technology has eased the separation, a picture on the phone or computer can never replace human contact.

I hope that over the coming months travel between countries will still be permitted and that you will be able to visit our country without issues. I, too, hope to be able to resume my visits to the communities of Maltese living abroad. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Maltese patients receiving treatment in London and I also had the opportunity to meet several nuns and monks assisting them. These are heart-warming encounters, but they also instil hope and courage for a better future. As was the meeting I had with a good number of Maltese consultants in Surgery and Medicine holding high positions in the best hospitals in the United Kingdom.

In conclusion, I want to once again wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas.

Above all, I wish you prosperity and health for a year full of happiness, peace, and love.

All the best.

Messaġġ irrekordjat ta’ xewqat għall-Milied u għas-Sena l-Ġdida 2022 mill-ET George Vella, President ta’ Malta għall-Maltin li jgħixu barra

Għeżież Maltin u Għawdxin,

Minkejja d-distanza fiżika u ż-żmien li firidkom minn dawn il-gżejjer, intom tibqgħu viċin tagħna kemm fil-ħsieb u kemm f’qalbna.

Għalhekk, bi pjaċir nieħu l-opportunità naqsam dawn il-kelmtejn qosra magħkom u nawgura lilkom u lil qrabatkom xewqat sbieħ f’dan iż-żmien hekk speċjali tas-sena.

Forsi kienu ftit dawk li bassru li s-sitwazzjoni fl-2021 ser tkun qed tixbah ħafna lil dik tal-2020. Nistqarr magħkom, li bħal ħafna, nixtieq li nsibu soluzzjoni f’qasir żmien imma dejjiema biex negħlbu l-effetti ħżiena tal-pandemija. Iżda jidher li dan il-virus ser jibqa’ joħloq sfidi li kull ma jmur ikomplu jinbidlu u li ser jieħdu fit-tul.
Nappella għalhekk biex aktar nies jisimgħu minn dak li qed tgħidilna x-xjenza u jsegwu b’aktar attenzjoni il-pariri tal-professjonisti, fosthom mezzi ta’ prekawzjoni, bħal ma huwa t-teħid tat-tilqim.

Nemmen li l-koperazzjoni internazzjonali, speċjalment bejn pajjiżi sinjuri u dawk anqas sinjuri, hija kruċjali biex bħala familja waħda nkomplu nimxu ’l quddiem. Minkejja d-distanzi ġeografiċi bejnietna, aħna lkoll nibqgħu kommessi nilħqu l-miri tas-Sostennibiltà 2030, u niżguraw li ma nħallu ’l ħadd barra, jew kif inhu magħruf il-motto bl-Ingliż, Leave no one behind.
Mingħajr ma’ nnaqqas mill-emerġenza medika li ħolqot din il-pandemija, nħares lejn sena l-ġdida b’ottimiżmu u nawgura li nsibu bilanċ aħjar bejn l-isfidi tas-saħħa u l-ħarsien tad-drittijiet fundamentali tal-bniedem.

Ma nistax ma nsemmix lil dawk il-ħaddiema kollha li jaħdmu fil-qasam tas-saħħa u nsellmilhom għad-determinazzjoni u r-reżiljenza tagħhom biex tul dawn l-aħħar xhur, komplew ikunu eroj għalina lkoll.

Sinjuri, Hekk kif din is-sena waslet fil-għabex tagħha, ninsab fiduċjuż li l-ġrajjiet li komplew isawru lil gżiritna ma nistgħux inħarsu lejhom minn lenti iżolata, iżda f’kuntest reġjonali u internazzjonali.

L-effetti tat-tibdil fil-klima, l-emerġenza umanitarja li qed tieħu xejra serja f’ċertu partijiet tad-dinja, u l-livelli ta’ inugwaljanza bejn il-pajjiżi fit-tramuntana u dawk fin-nofsinhar, qed ikomplu jkattru sistema inġusta u ta’ ħsara għad-dinja tagħna.

Il-bejgħ u t-traffikar tal-armi, speċjalment f’żoni ta’ gwerra u pajjiżi jissieltu mal-forzi tal-estremiżmu, ikomplu jxekklu l-isforzi kollettivi tagħna favur il-paċi u l-għaqda. Nappella biex aktar pajjiżi jagħrfu l-ħsara li ġġib magħha politika militarizzanti u jiżguraw li l-liġi internazzjonali tkun għodda favur id-drittijiet fundamentali u mhux arma ta’ sterminju.

Nilqa’ bi pjaċir id-diskussjonijiet COP26 fuq l-emerġenza tal-klima li saru ftit tal-ġimgħat ilu ġewwa Glasgow. Permezz tad-djalogu u r-rispett reċiproku, dawn id-diskussjonijiet jixhdu familja internazzjonali li għalkemm tħaddan bosta diverġenzi politiċi, lesta taħdem flimkien biex tinstab soluzzjoni.

Hija din l-għaqda msawra fuq id-djalogu li twitti t-triq għal bidla pożittiva u fit-tul.

Permezz tal-Uffiċju tiegħi, jien ukoll ħdimt bis-sħiħ biex insaħħaħ id-djalogu bejn partijiet differenti fis-soċjetà Maltija. Minkejja r-restrizzjonijiet, bi pjaċir ngħid li matul l-2021, ippresedejt fuq bosta konferenzi li jindirizzaw l-għaqda nazzjonali minn angoli differenti. Il-Konferenza dwar l-Għaqda Nazzjonali mtellgħa fi Frar, il-Konferenza f’Għeluq il-Mitt Sena mill-Kostituzzjoni f’April, u l-Konferenza Dwar l-iStat tan-Nazzjon f’Ġunju, kienu inizjattivi importanti u li ġabu flimkien bosta organizazzjonijiet, esperti u ħassieba differenti.

Bi pjaċir naqsam magħkom li bħalissa għaddejjin il-preparamenti biex f’Marzu 2022, flimkien mal-Albabtain Cultural Foundation, ser inkun qed norganizza t-tieni Forum Dinji għal Kultura ta’ Paċi. Permezz ta’ parteċipazzjoni internazzjonali, dan il-forum ser ikun qed iservi ta’ pjattaforma importanti ta’ diskussjoni u katalist globali biex tkompli tinbena kultura ta’ paċi.

Nistedinkom biex anke intom tkunu parti mid-diskussjoni lokali u permezz ta’ opportunitajiet varji tersqu qrib il-ġrajjiet kurrenti tal-gżejjer Maltin u tkebbsu fil-ġenerazzjonijiet iż-żgħar interess u mħabba għall-kultura u l-lingwa Maltija.

Din tal-aħħar qiegħda għal qalbi ferm għax hija l-aktar espressjoni ħajja tal-ġens tagħna u li kompliet taqdina bl-aħjar mod, minkejja influwenzi minn barra u teknoloġija ġdida. Huma ftit dawk il-popli li jistgħu jiftaħru b’ilsien uniku li kompla jevolvi matul is-snin.
Nifhem li kienu bosta dawk li soffrew mhux ftit minħabba n-nuqqas ta’ safar lejn Malta u t-tgħanniq u l-ferħ li ġġib magħha laqgħa bejn il-familjari. Għalkemm it-teknoloġija taffiet xi ftit il-firda, l-istampa fuq il-mobile jew il-kompjuter, ma jista’ qatt ikun l-istess bħall-kuntatt uman.

Nawgura li matul ix-xhur li ġejjin l-ivjaġġar bejn il-pajjiżi jkompli jkun permess u tkunu tistgħu żżuru pajjiżna bla xkiel. Anke jien, nittama li nkun nista’ nerġa’ nibda biż-żjarat tiegħi lill-komunitajiet ta’ Maltin li Jgħixu Barra. Ftit tal-ġimgħat ilu, kelli l-pjaċir nżur il-pazjenti Maltin li jinsabu rikoverati Londra u ħadt l-opportunità biex niltaqa’ wkoll ma’ għadd ta’ sorijiet u patrijiet li jaħdmu fosthom. Dawn huma laqgħat li jmissu l-qalb, iżda huma wkoll laqgħat li jnisslu t-tama u l-kuraġġ għal ġejjieni aħjar. Bħal ma kienet il-laqgħa li kelli ma’ numru sabiħ ta’ konsulenti Maltin fil-Kirurġija u l-Mediċina, li jokkupaw pożizzjonijiet għolja fl-aqwa sptarijiet fir-Renju Unit.

Nagħlaq dawn il-kelmtejn qosra billi mill-ġdid nawgura lilkom u lill-għeżież tagħkom, xewqat sbieħ għal Milied Hieni.
Fuq kollox, ir-risq u s-saħħa għal sena mimlija hena, paċi u mħabba.

Insellmilkom

The Embassy of Malta in Washington DC and the Permanent Representation of Malta to the UN co-hosted an event on Jewish Heritage Malta, in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority and the Israeli Ministry of Tourism under the auspices of the Culture Diplomacy Fund of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. Special thanks goes to Michelle Buttigieg, Karen Hoffman and her team, as well as to the staff of both missions for their contribution in making this event possible. Likewise, it was a great pleasure working with our Israeli colleagues and friends in promoting our common heritage among the number of prominent tour operators and others from the tourism industry present for the event, including our special guest Terry Dale, President and CEO of the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA).
