Longtime Bismarck Rep. George Keiser dies

I am saddened to hear about George’s passing. He was a fantastic legislator and a good friend. My heart hurts for Kathy and the rest of his family. Godspeed my friend.

State Rep. George Keiser, R-Bismarck, died Wednesday afternoon, following a battle with ALS. He was 75.

Bureau of Prisons can keep inmates in home confinement after coronavirus emergency ends

This is a smart decision by the Department of Justice. Under the CARES Act, certain federal inmates were allowed to transition to home confinement due to the pandemic. They are non-violent offenders, many of whom have now been released for more than a year. Everyone released still has to comply with the terms of their release. This is smart criminal justice. Returning them to prison serves no public safety interest. It makes no sense to reincarcerate people and break up families.

Justice Department ruling could allow thousands to stay out of prison, continue reintegrating into society.

Armstrong Joins Amicus Brief in Pending Clean Air Act Supreme Court Case

The Clean Power Plan would be expensive for consumers, hostile to America’s energy producers, and undermine reliable baseload power. States like North Dakota are best equipped to implement policies that keep our air and water clean, not the federal government. I am hopeful the U.S. Supreme Court will agree.

BISMARCK, N.D. – Today, Congressman Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) joined 47 senators and 43 House members on an amicus curiae brief filed in the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the petitioners, including the state of North Dakota, in the pending case West Virginia, et al. v. Environmental Protection Age...

North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem to retire

Wayne Stenehjem has dedicated decades of his life to serving North Dakotans. His work on improving safety, states’ rights, and his many years as North Dakota’s top law enforcement officer have been invaluable. I am proud to call him my friend and I wish him the best after a job well done.

North Dakota’s longest-serving attorney general won’t seek reelection next year.

North Dakota Senate leader to retire after 30 years in Legislature

Rich Wardner has been my teacher, coach, and leader in the North Dakota State Senate. He has been my mentor, colleague, and friend. North Dakota is a better place because of his steadfast leadership. Dickinson would not be where it is today without his service. I hope he enjoys some well-deserved downtime. He has most definitely earned it.

A former football coach and math teacher, Wardner was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1990 and the Senate in 1998. He has served as majority leader in the upper chamber since 2011, assuming the role after the death of former leader Bob Stenehjem.

I voted against raising the debt limit by $2.5 trillion, which pushes our national debt over $30 trillion.

The cycle of spending money we don’t have and saddling future generations of Americans with debt is unsustainable. It has to stop.

Armstrong Joins Effort to Re-Charter National Coal Council

The National Coal Council plays a major role in advancing new coal production, including for use in energy generation and innovative new carbon products and materials. The NCC charter must be renewed so it can continue advancing policy, technology, and markets for North Dakota’s coal producers.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) cosponsored legislation to re-charter the National Coal Council (NCC), the Coal Council Certainty Act of 2021. Under the Biden administration, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) allowed the nearly 40-year-old NCC charter to lapse in November ...

US inflation surges to 39-year high as consumer prices soar higher

Rising costs are hitting every American in a real, painful way.

Yet, Democrats continue to recklessly push through trillions in spending that will worsen this crisis.

Consumer prices surged at the fastest pace in nearly four decades in November as Americans paid more for practically everything from groceries to cars to gasoline, solidifying hot inflation as a key trait of the economic recovery.

Today, Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH5) and Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA9) introduced the Halt Lethal Trafficking (HALT) Fentanyl Act. Currently, fentanyl and fentanyl related substances (FRS) temporarily fall under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) due to a temporary scheduling or...

Support for our military is important to the security of our nation and of North Dakota. The 2022 NDAA provides critical funds for a strong defense and a pay raise for the men and women in our armed forces. I am pleased that the final bill is bipartisan, as supporting our troops should be.

GOP lawmakers hammer Biden over increase in coal costs, historic shortage

Coal power remains the most reliable energy source. The supply chain crisis brought on by the Biden administration’s failed policies is causing shortages across the economy, including resources needed to meet our energy demands.

We must empower energy producers in North Dakota and around the country to provide baseload power to millions of Americans, not burden them with more regulations and red tape that do nothing to make our air and water cleaner.

Republican lawmakers are lambasting President Biden's policies over U.S. coal shortages.

Fracking powers North Dakota town Williston to fastest-growing micro area in America

“The population of the Williston micropolitan statistical area – which includes Williston itself and the surrounding Williams County – exploded between the 2010 Census and the 2020 Census. There were 22,398 people in 2010 and 40,950 in 2020. That's an increase of 83%.

The only other county in the United States to grow as fast was neighboring McKenzie County, which saw its population increase from 6,360 to 14,704, or 131%.”

Williston, North Dakota was the fastest-growing "micro" area in the United States between 2010 and 2020.

The cause for dramatic gasoline price increases is largely due to the Biden Administration's dangerous energy policies that have stifled our domestic energy industry, not unsubstantiated allegations of anti-consumer behavior.

Today I led a letter to President Joe Biden along with 19 House Republicans colleagues asking him to stop distracting the public from these policies and empower our producers to restore the energy independence that we recently enjoyed.

Bipartisan lawmakers urge Biden to prioritize sentencing panel nominees

The U.S. Sentencing Commission is a bipartisan, independent agency that provides federal courts with sentencing guidelines. Currently, only one of its seven positions is filled, and it has not had a quorum since January 2019. No more than four members of the Commission can be members of the same political party and at least three must be federal judges.

Today, Rep. Jamie Raskin and I requested that President Biden prioritize nominations to the Commission so it can continue its work to improve the federal criminal justice system.

Two Democratic and Republican lawmakers in a letter on Monday urged President Joe Biden to prioritize filling vacancies that have left the U.S. Sentencing Commission without a quorum, saying the situation has stalled criminal justice reform.

For the first time, more than 100,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 12 months, with a majority of the deaths coming from fentanyl.

Armstrong Votes Against Democrats’ Social Engineering Project

This morning, I voted against Democrats' social engineering project. They continue their reckless government spending spree by pushing through a partisan bill that will increase taxes, cause consumer costs to explode, and usher in more government control over the lives of Americans. The CBO report released yesterday confirmed what we already expected. Their bill is not paid for. The fact is their social engineering project will cost trillions of dollars and increase the national deficit by more than $367 billion.

As an agriculture and energy producing state, North Dakota in particular will suffer as a result of this bill’s enactment. Policies like the methane tax will stifle innovation in the energy industry and threaten the jobs of thousands of North Dakotans. Additionally, the massive increase in federal spending will exacerbate skyrocketing inflation, leading to higher costs for our farmers and ranchers and endangering their livelihoods.

North Dakotans have had enough with this out-of-control spending. I am proud to vote against Democrats’ efforts to saddle future generations of Americans with more debt to pay for their far-left wish list.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) released the following statement after voting against the Democrats’ reckless tax and spend spree, H.R. 5376 – the Build Back Better Act. “Democrats continue their reckless government spending spree by pushing through a partisan bill tha...
