Congress provides more than $3 for every dollar that JDRF donates to type 1 research! Time Magazine called JDRF "one of the nation's most forceful disease advocacy groups." When it comes to fighting type 1 diabetes, JDRF's strength lies in our numbers and the ability of our Advocates to work together to build bonds--bonds with one another, as well as with our Members of Congress. These relationships strengthen our community, provide support for those who are living with type 1 diabetes, and deliver our message--the need for a cure--faster and more effectively.

Mission: We’re organizing the diabetes community to find better treatments and a cure faster by partnering with Congress to promote and fund research.

Healthcare Principles - JDRF

Access to affordable, comprehensive health insurance is critical for millions of Americans living with pre-existing conditions such as #t1d. The Supreme Court heard arguments today on a case that could jeopardize healthcare principles for which JDRF has advocated for many years. While a decision on this case is not expected until June 2021, JDRF will continue to underscore to Congress and other decision makers the importance of insurance protections for people with T1D and, in the event of a negative court decision, will call for Congress to take up new legislation to address the issue to #DefendPreEx. For now, current law protections – which prevent insurance companies from denying insurance, limiting coverage, or charging more for insurance due to a pre-existing condition – remain in place. Learn more about JDRF's Healthcare Principles:

People with type 1 diabetes (T1D) need access to affordable, comprehensive health insurance that covers the care necessary to treat their diabetes. To survive, they rely on daily supplies of insulin and the tools required to manage T1D.

Thank Congress for $4.52 Million in T1D Research Funding! - JDRF

We are pleased to share with you that Congress has JUST passed a short-term, $4.52 million extension of the Special Diabetes Program (SDP) as part of a bill that funds the Federal government through December 11, 2020. Thanks to on-going engagement by advocates like you, this short-term extension allows the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue to drive forward critical #T1D research priorities. The SDP is an important complement to JDRF-funded research, and improves lives while moving us closer to cures. While we are grateful for this short-term patch of funding, in the coming months we will need all the help we can get to secure a 4 to 5-year renewal of the SDP, and we’ll lean on you to help us get across the finish line! Say 'thank you' to your Representative and Senators today! www.jdrf.org/thankyou4SDP

Happy to share some positive news with our community related to COVID-19, and access to #T1D management tools...

Early in the pandemic, JDRF communicated concerns to the Medicare program regarding the ability of Medicare beneficiaries and providers to comply with CGM and #insulin pump eligibility criteria. We're pleased to share that they heard our concerns, and responded swiftly.

For the duration of the pandemic, the Medicare program has waived the requirement for a face-to-face visit to obtain an insulin pump, CGM, or associated supplies. Further, the “clinical criteria” have also been waived, including things like the lab tests for C-peptide or auto-antibodies, or logs of finger sticks. (The only thing that appears to be necessary is that the prescriber document that “the services were actually provided, and at the level billed, and that they were medically necessary.”

This means people with diabetes can avoid physician's offices and labs where they run the risk of COVID infection, and it greatly eases the paperwork burden on providers, many of whom are working without key communications systems that are typically needed to comply with the ordinary requirements.

JDRF welcomes Eli Lilly and Company/Lilly Diabetes' introduction of a co-pay card that allows anyone with commercial insurance, as well as those without any insurance, to purchase their monthly prescription of Lilly insulin for $35 or less in out-of-pocket costs. This is a critical step for the #T1D community during the #COVID19 pandemic. Affordable insulin access is more important now than ever. At JDRF, we’ve long advocated for low and predictable out-of-pocket costs for insulin. We’re urging other insulin manufacturers to immediately take actions similar to Lilly’s. We want these actions to become long-term solutions so people with T1D have the insulin they need to stay healthy while we work urgently for cures: http://ow.ly/GPeA30qw0ta

Thanks to continued efforts by #T1D advocates like you, several provisions that help the T1D community were included in the Congressional relief package that President Trump signed.

These include more than $75 million in funding for the Special Diabetes Program (#SDP) , extending it through November 30, 2020. Join us in thanking our Members of Congress: jdrf.org/SDPthanks

A message on #T1D and #Coronavirus from Aaron Kowalski, PhD. President and CEO of JDRF:

"For JDRF, the health and well-being of everyone in the type 1 #diabetes (#T1D) community is paramount. As we learn more about the potential impacts of COVID-19, which has now been declared a National Emergency, we know you will have questions and concerns.

Many of us, myself included, live every day with T1D, and more of us have loved ones with this disease. So we want to share the most up-to-date information to stay well as soon as we have it. We’ll be continually updating our website, JDRF.org as we know more, but here’s what we know now:

The Risks
First, know that the risk of contracting COVID-19 does not increase with T1D. The risks are exactly the same for people with T1D as for anyone else.

Right now, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that different parts of the country are seeing different levels of COVID-19 activity. The risk currently may be low in your community. Yet the situation is rapidly evolving so we are advising everyone with T1D to follow precautions similar to what we recommend during flu season.

Prevention
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; do not touch your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands; avoid close contact with people who are sick; stay home when you are sick; and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. During this time, you may also decide to avoid mass transit or air travel, or gatherings of people.

T1D-Specific Concerns
I have heard many of your concerns about the availability of critical T1D medications and supplies. Please know that we have been in contact with the leading manufacturers of insulin and T1D supplies, and they have told us that COVID-19 has not impacted their manufacturing and distribution capabilities. We will continue to monitor the situation carefully and update you if anything changes.

However, as in any possible emergency, it is important to be prepared. Stock your home with diabetes medical supplies and carbohydrates for at least 14 days, in case you are quarantined.

If you were planning to attend a JDRF event in the coming weeks, please know JDRF will be following the recommendations about public gatherings and postponing all JDRF events through April 19. We are exploring different approaches to our events through the use of streaming technology and other virtual alternatives. You will hear more about this from your local chapters.

Treatment if You Are Sick
If, despite your best efforts, you do contract COVID-19, or the flu, you will need to monitor your blood glucose and ketones more often than usual. We also advise anyone with T1D who believes they have contracted COVID-19 to reach out to their health care provider. The recommendations on JDRF.org to help people manage T1D when they have the flu can also help people with T1D who contract COVID-19.

Again, we will keep you apprised as the situation unfolds. During this time, we must all work together — with both caution and creativity — and never lose sight of our mission to create a world without T1D. Take care and visit jdrf.org/coronavirus to stay up-to-date."

"Protections for people with pre-existing conditions are critical for the type 1 diabetes #T1D community, and are a top priority for JDRF. No insurance company should be able to deny someone health insurance, charge them more, or limit their coverage due to a pre-existing condition. Yesterday's Fifth Circuit decision declared the Affordable Care Act (ACA)’s individual insurance mandate unconstitutional, but referred the issue of the constitutionality of the rest of the law back to the district court. That means that current law protections for pre-existing conditions remain in place, but under challenge. At JDRF, we will continue to use our collective voice to fight to preserve protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and fight for affordable and accessible healthcare. We are on the cusp of enormous opportunities that will improve the lives of people living with T1D, and find cures for the disease, but without the protections in the ACA, many members of the T1D community will not be able to afford and benefit from these advances."
