#excellence > Gap+ Program student Erica Williams won two fall 2020 outstanding student #awards for her performances in class. Here is recognition for one of them - her Gap Program Mentored Field Practicum course - where she was nominated by faculty member Andrene M. Taylor, who gave these remarks about her:

"Erica held two demanding internships this semester. The first internship she held was with SHINE, and the second was with the Human Rights Campaign. In addition to holding these #internships, Erica remained focused and on top of her assignments. She also developed an exceptional digital portfolio that she can use to propel her voice on the topic of the day. Erica is a college #graduate, and her maturity reflected in the way she took the time to mentor her younger classmates.”

Congratulations, Erica!

#excellence > Washington Semester Program student Feinuo "Penny" He, from our partner institution Vassar College, won a fall 2020 outstanding student #award for her performance in the class, Washington Semester Program Independent Study Project: Criminology and Justice. She was nominated by faculty member Bob Carolla, who gave these remarks about her:

"Penny researches deeply, makes perceptive connections, and offers sound opinions. She compared principles of punishment and restorative justice. For the Supreme Court hearings, she pivoted to Justice Amy Barrett’s 1998 law review article, 'Catholic Judges in Capital Cases.' She analyzed transcripts of the hearings and distinguished points of law and politics. She has since focused on profile investigations and limited admissibility of their state-of-mind testimony about crime scenes affecting charges and sentencing."

Congratulations, Penny!

This week, Washington Semester Programs (Mentorship Program DC) student ambassador Evin Goodwin will hold an #InstagramTakeover (https://www.instagram.com/au_wsp/), where she'll spotlight her remote #internship at DC's Americans for Medical Progress (AMP), a nonprofit organization that "builds understanding and appreciation necessary and human animal research."

Evin: "I want to let prospective Washington Semester Programs students know how the Mentorship Program, specifically, can benefit a student, whether it be to gain work experience while working with actual professionals or learning experience from the American University classes taken while in the program. I also want people to know that being a spring-admit isn't as bad as it seems. This program offered me a great opportunity to still learn at AU [and] receive much professional development while interning, in my freshman year, at a great establishment."
