#excellence > As we prepare to launch the spring 2021 semester tomorrow, we present the last of our Fall 2020 Outstanding Student #Award winners, Kayla Renner, who joined us from our partner institution, the University of Arizona. Also a fall 2020 Washington Semester Programs student ambassador, Kayla quickly endeared herself to program faculty and staff with her intelligence, enthusiasm, and work-ethic.

She was nominated by faculty member, Jeffrey Sosland, PhD, who wrote: “Kayla met her responsibilities with high distinction. Bringing enthusiasm and a wonderful attitude to the class, she was highly motivated and exhibited great leadership. She excelled in all aspects of the course and actively engaged speakers, her professor, and other students during class discussions. Kayla was equally successful in her internship at the U.S. Department of Commerce, exhibiting both initiative in securing the internship and the interpersonal characteristics necessary to succeed there."

Congratulations, Kayla!!!

Highly regarded Mentorship Program DC student - and American University Class of 2024 Eagle 🦅 - Malien Tingpalpong was nominated by two different instructors, Andrea Morris and Christian Maisch, PhD.

In her nomination submission, instructor Morris stated that, "Malien is a leader in the classroom, showing mindfulness of others and their experiences. Her contributions are insightful, reflective, challenging, and respectful."

Professor Maisch also assessed Malien as being an exemplary student: "Malien was truly outstanding in my International Law class and the best among an excellent group of students. She impressed me immensely with the quality of her work: her thorough research, insightful analysis, and beautiful writing. Her work is on par with a graduate student.”

#excellence > As we prepare for the start of the spring 2021 semester later this week, we continue to honor our Fall 2020 Outstanding Student #Award winners. GAP Program student - and fall 2020 Washington Semester Programs student ambassador - Brandon Smith impressed virtually everyone he encountered over the course of the semester. His internship site, Just Future Project, stated: "Brandon is a stellar, intelligent and dedicated young man. We are fortunate to have him as part of our team!" The accolades culminated in a nomination for an Outstanding Student Award from faculty member Andrene M. Taylor, PhD:

"Brandon is an exceptional writer, who wrote a series of indelibly thought-provoking blogs for his course portfolio. He was also a stand-out among his peers, often taking on leadership roles in group activities. Moreover, as a high-school graduate, he navigated the challenging transition from #Atlanta to #DC with maturity and acute self-awareness. This is especially noteworthy as he was among the few fall 2020 students who were away from home during the pandemic.”

Congratulations, Brandon!!!

Industrious and efficient, Genevieve Harding is a Washington Semester Program student and fall 2020 Washington Semester Programs student ambassador who joined us from our partner institution Kenyon College. Genevieve, whose mother is a Washington Semester Program alum, was nominated by her 'Making of the President 2020' class professor Richard Semiatin, PhD.

“Genevieve is a superior student with a clear analytical mind. She writes superbly, demonstrating writing skills on the level of a graduate student. She has a curious mind, and that leads her to ask probing questions with the objective to learn rather than to make a point. It was an honor to teach and mentor her this semester.” - Nominating Faculty Member Richard Semiatin
