Senate releases spending bills, setting up negotiations for December deal

The Senate Appropriations Committee released their Fiscal Year 2021 Interior Appropriations Bill this week. The bill would provide a nearly $20 million increase to the Historic Preservation Fund, from $118.66 million to $138 million. This includes much needed increases for SHPOs and THPOs, continued support and increases for important grant programs like the Civil Rights Grant program, Save America's Treasures and Historic Revitalization Grants. The bill also calls for $10 million for a new grant program to preserve sites associated with the Revolutionary War. Once again, the bill also included language raising concerns about the proposed rule changes to the National Register of Historic Places. This is great news for historic preservation priorities as Congress continues work on reaching a year-end spending deal. Stay tuned for more! https://thehill.com/policy/finance/525277-senate-releases-spending-bills-setting-up-negotiations-for-december-deal

📣A special message from Congresswoman Deb Haaland!

Elected to Congress in 2018 as one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress, Congresswoman Deb Haaland (D-NM) has quickly become one of the biggest champions of protecting historic and cultural resources.

She serves as Vice Chair of the full House Committee on Natural Resources and Chair of the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands. With her first piece of legislation, she introduced the ANTIQUITIES Act which aims to protect America’s National Monuments from attempts to eliminate or reduce their size.

Rep. Haaland also helped lead the effort earlier this year to permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund and establish dedicated funding to address the deferred maintenance backlog at our National Parks and other public lands.

She signed on to the Historic Preservation Fund dear colleague letter in 2019 and 2020, which each year called for a record level of funding for the Historic Preservation Fund. She’s also a member of the Historic Preservation Caucus.

"Experience and extensive research tell us that preserving our historic built environment brings tangible benefits, many of them economic."
Hi. I wanted to share this excellent essay by architecture critic Blair Kamin about Wright's iconic Unity Temple in Oak Park and the latest challenge it faces. Of interest (and concern!) to all Wrightophiles, I'd think! I hope you'll help raise awareness and spread the word!
Lots of important information and action!
#SaveOurCineramaDomes!!!! http://www.thesanjoseblog.com/2018/02/federal-realty-moves-forward-on-1.html?m=1 I’m not too worried ... yet. Remember: we’ve been in this mess before, even before the SJ-SC war of words. Also ... the New Mission went through at least several such trials ... and now look: thanks to its full restoration and ingenious renovation, the 1916 playhouse is now a huge draw for both locals AND tourists. We just have to remain optimistic and persistent. Also... Lawyers exist for a reason.
Greetings Preservation Action: The U.S. Department of State - Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) would like for you to follow us @State_OBO. Follow Us Today. Thank You.
I am honestly confused. At the same time that the Historic Tax Credit hangs in the balance, your website is down for weeks?
This past Tuesday, the San Jose City Council approved a general plan for the Winchester Urban Village. There is still a loooooooong way to go, yet our situation has encountered a slight rise in urgency, and if is clear that more needs to be done, in terms of awareness and effort. #CityofSanJose is knowingly passing up on a most perfect opportunity to better community and society!!
TBT ... to a promotion for the engagement of Minions at a certain world-famous Cinerama playhouse, and an example of the creativity for a nationwide tourist destination which Liccardo & Co totally have the power to endorse. #SaveOurCineramaDomes in Sam Jose, California!! Tuesday at 6 pm. SJ City Council Chambers. Wings Chinese restaurant -- an ultimate symbol of Asian history, struggle and perseverance in the valley -- is shuttering due to high rent. How is this related to the Domes and Bob's Big Boy prototype cafe? Years ago, I saw this type of thing; the gradual destruction, albeit seemingly indirect, of character, simplicity and real progress. Reed had no sense of long-term outlook, and unfortunately, Liccardo seems to be following in his footsteps. Sadly, through the lens of city hall, we were seen as idiots. We need to preserve what we can. Now more than ever. To save ourselves. All we can do is try, and try some more, and refuse to ever give in. The short term thinking here is incredibly troublesome, and the long term benefits for the city and for society are incredibly amazing, and besides San Francisco's New Mission Theatre fight being used as great inspiration, I do know that other preservation groups are indeed keeping a close eye on our battle. I have been extremely persistent, as have others. The demolition permits REMAIN pulled, remember. This coming Tuesday at 6 pm, people; whatever happens, we "need" to pack the chambers, and show unified support for the Domes, the cafe, and the Winchester Ranch mobile home park! The housing, and the quality of life issues, and the opp for more tourists to bring in more money and in turn to improve all of San Jose... It is indeed all connected to social justice. Remember: San Jose has an opportunity to become something here. Something for the short and long term. A real destination. A tourist spot. A truly awesome learning opportunity for us; our kids; our grandkids; our great grandkids. Opportunities rife with positivity, and hope, and simplicity, and character, and romance, and ... truly authentic opportunities from which we can take away elements; elements which are bigger, which will forever be bigger, than anything else. Than any of us. A truly positive societal catalyst. Does Mayor Sam Liccardo really wish to admit that this is "not" what San Jose is or should be about? Does anybody? COUNTLESS CREATIVE OPPORTUNITIES (ANNUAL CENTURY 22 STAR WARS PARTIES IN MAY WITH ARTISTS FROM ALL THE FILMS? Other rare reunions?). With Barco escape’s Cinerama-like three screen format; 35mm film; 70mm film; even a renewed Cinerama (needed equipment can be obtained easily and cheaply) best option now: some wealthy individual or company -- such as Alamo draft house (who restored and renovated San francisco’s new mission theatre, after well over a decade of failed attempts by developers to demolish the 1916 Art Deco landmark) – purchases the property and restores it. Get a non-profit or two to occupy the domes *TO BRING IN LOADS OF $$$ FOR SAN JOSE! TO TRANSFORM IT INTO THE WORLDWIDE TOURIST DESTINATION IT CAN BE!!* *If We Could Garner Support From and Spread the Word Within Hollywood, That Would Be Huge*
