The pandemic has been hard on us all. We stood together and made it through. The DC Government's STAY program can play a major part in helping renters who have trouble paying their rent. Since May, the RIA Community Center has assisted residents with completing and submitting their online applications and they continue to offer this support. Contact the RIA Community Center to make an appointment.

Thanks to everyone who turned out to celebrate the soft-reopening of in-person programming at the RIA Community Center. While the free Rita’s and PPE were nice, we can’t wait to get back to the things that really make our community great, like tutoring, STEAM education, medical help, adult education, job assistance and fresh food distribution!

05/25/2021

MidCity cares deeply about all of the residents in our Brookland Manor community. To ensure the safety and well-being of our residents, we employ a private security firm and offer a robust set of social services at Brookland Manor including after school tutoring, summer camp, computer coding classes, adult education classes, support services for our seniors and a supplemental food program.

Given the COVID pandemic and public health protocols in place at Brookland Manor Apartments, public gatherings are prohibited in common areas of the property, with the exception of our socially-distanced outdoor food distribution program that is staffed by Brookland Manor’s dedicated resident services team. Important, long-standing in-person programming, including our tutoring program, computer coding classes, and other social services shifted to a virtual format to accommodate our public health policy at the property – to ensure that everyone is safe.

We are disappointed that a large gathering on private Brookland Manor property on Saturday, May 22nd created public health concerns because of a failure by event organizers to follow gathering protocols that all other community members adhere to. Additionally, the property fielded many calls from residents with complaints about the size of the crowd, and public health and safety concerns.

We look forward to safer times ahead and welcoming community gatherings for the benefit of all of our residents.

Olde City Garden - sometimes referred to as “the beating green heart of the city” - is again open for the season at RIA @ Brookland Manor. The partnership between OCG and RIA developer MidCity Financial is a great example of the vibrant city life we want to help build along this part of Rhode Island Avenue. In 2019, when OCG was displaced from Shaw after almost a decade in business, we offered them a free spot in the burgeoning Art Park @ RIA, preserving a source of urban delight for all.

Metropolitan Police Department 5th District officers visited RIA last week to read “Green Eggs and Ham” to some of our young residents in honor of National Read Across America Day, which is celebrated annually on March 2nd...the birthday of Dr. Seuss! The officers brought their open truck so they could read aloud to the children, while being socially distanced. They also generously provided books and “Cat In The Hat” goodie bags!

We are pleased to announce that earlier today the DC Court of Appeals affirmed the DC Zoning Commission's approval of the Phase II PUD for our RIA redevelopment project! This approval allows the 20-acre Brookland Manor Apartments to be redeveloped into “RIA,” a vibrant, mixed-income, mixed-use destination featuring 1,760 apartments and 181,000 square feet of commercial space, including a full-service grocery store, ground-floor retail, and a 3 acre public park and plaza. The project will be completed in phases to ensure no off-site displacement of Brookland Manor residents while new homes are being built. Construction of the first two buildings, consisting of a 200-unit senior affordable apartment building and a 141-unit multifamily apartment building, will commence in early 2022, with delivery slated for mid-2023. Nearly one out of every four homes in this project will be affordable, including the preservation of a 373-unit project-based Section 8 contract. We are ready to deliver on our commitments and to move forward with construction!

The RIA Help Desk is available as a resource to assist residents with COVID-19 vaccination registration and appointment scheduling! Just yesterday, a resident who used this resource received his first dose of the vaccine. And, when the team learned he was anxious to use public transportation and needed transportation assistance, our Program Manager personally drove him to the appointment! We’re so proud of the RIA team’s efforts to help residents get vaccinated...and for their personal kindness! We encourage all RIA residents to contact the Help Desk for assistance acquiring a COVID-19 vaccine(s).
