RIA at Brookland Manor

RIA at Brookland Manor RIA is a 20-acre community destination featuring new apartments, homes, and senior living, a revitalized town center, and new retailers and restaurants.

New directions, fresh opportunities, fun discoveries – it’s all within reach at RIA, the heart of DC’s revitalized Rhode Island Avenue Corridor. Expected to break ground in 2021, this smartly designed, seamlessly connected and inclusive community will celebrate the best of city living with walkable streets, convenient shopping and dining, a vibrant mix of friends and neighbors, and easy access to downtown. Stroll along tree-lined promenades, relax in ample green spaces, enjoy the latest blend from the local coffee roaster, or indulge in a newly opened restaurant on the avenue. Reimagine a neighborhood that feels like home, just right for today’s District. This is DC, RIAlized.

Metropolitan Police Department 5th District officers visited RIA last week to read “Green Eggs and Ham” to some of our young residents in honor of National Read Across America Day, which is celebrated annually on March 2nd...the birthday of Dr. Seuss! The officers brought their open truck so they could read aloud to the children, while being socially distanced. They also generously provided books and “Cat In The Hat” goodie bags!

We are pleased to announce that earlier today the DC Court of Appeals affirmed the DC Zoning Commission's approval of the Phase II PUD for our RIA redevelopment project! This approval allows the 20-acre Brookland Manor Apartments to be redeveloped into “RIA,” a vibrant, mixed-income, mixed-use destination featuring 1,760 apartments and 181,000 square feet of commercial space, including a full-service grocery store, ground-floor retail, and a 3 acre public park and plaza. The project will be completed in phases to ensure no off-site displacement of Brookland Manor residents while new homes are being built. Construction of the first two buildings, consisting of a 200-unit senior affordable apartment building and a 141-unit multifamily apartment building, will commence in early 2022, with delivery slated for mid-2023. Nearly one out of every four homes in this project will be affordable, including the preservation of a 373-unit project-based Section 8 contract. We are ready to deliver on our commitments and to move forward with construction!

The RIA Help Desk is available as a resource to assist residents with COVID-19 vaccination registration and appointment scheduling! Just yesterday, a resident who used this resource received his first dose of the vaccine. And, when the team learned he was anxious to use public transportation and needed transportation assistance, our Program Manager personally drove him to the appointment! We’re so proud of the RIA team’s efforts to help residents get vaccinated...and for their personal kindness! We encourage all RIA residents to contact the Help Desk for assistance acquiring a COVID-19 vaccine(s).

We are so thankful for the officers of the Metropolitan Police Department 5th District, who donated and personally delivered over 100 bags of fresh groceries to the RIA community center for distribution to our residents! The groceries arrived last Monday, which gave us yet another reason to celebrate and honor Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and legacy of doing for others.

Did you hear that the city recently declared go-go the official music of Washington, DC?

Originating in the early 1970s, go-go was a new and innovative sound brought to the nation's capital and was heavily inspired by funk, blues, soul, and even salsa. Go-go music is known for bringing together communities through its unique sound and rich history.

“Today, we’re going to let the world know that go-go is D.C.,” Mayor Muriel Bowser via NBC Washington.
