The Chief Nurse of the Air Force, Brig Gen Gwendolyn Foster and her SG1N team recently visited the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) to strengthen ties and explore opportunities for the Air Force Nurse Corps. This visit emphasized collaboration between USUHS and the Air Force in training and developing future nurse leaders for military healthcare.

USUHS provides advanced education and training tailored to the unique demands of military healthcare environments, offering programs that focus on leadership, trauma care, public health, and operational medicine. For the Air Force Nurse Corps, USUHS presents a pathway to specialized skills, fostering readiness and resilience through evidence-based practices and military-focused research. This partnership enables Air Force nurses to develop clinical expertise and leadership competencies essential for serving in diverse global missions.

USUHS offers advanced degree programs for Air Force Nurse Corps officers that support military healthcare needs. These programs include master’s and doctoral degrees in nursing, focusing on clinical, research, and leadership skills essential for operational readiness. Key offerings include a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a PhD in Nursing Science, which emphasize evidence-based practices, trauma care, and public health tailored for military contexts. Additionally, USUHS provides specialized training in nurse anesthesia, family nurse practitioner, and mental health nursing, equipping Air Force nurses with the expertise to lead and excel in diverse, high-stakes healthcare environments worldwide.

There is a need for Family Nurse Practitioners. If interested please check their website for admission criteria https://nursing.usuhs.edu/admissions

Big thank you to CAPT Wallace (our Navy brother in arms) for making this happen.

Forged by Adversity: The True Test of Leadership
by Azeez Oguntade

“A gem is not polished without friction, nor a person without trials.” This ancient wisdom speaks directly to the heart of leadership. Adversity is not an obstacle, it’s the crucible that shapes us. The most effective leaders are not those who have avoided hardship, but those who have faced it, learned from it, and grown because of it.

Look at Nelson Mandela, who endured decades of imprisonment. Instead of breaking, he allowed that suffering to refine his character and strengthen his resolve, emerging as a global symbol of resilience and justice. His trials didn’t define his limits, they defined his greatness.

As leaders, we must see challenges as opportunities for growth. Each setback, each failure, is a chance to sharpen our skills, deepen our empathy, and strengthen our resolve. The friction we face today is what polishes us into better leaders tomorrow.

Leadership Takeaways:

a. Adversity refines leadership: How are you using life’s trials to hone your strengths?
b. Strength is forged in difficulty: Are you embracing the friction, or running from it?

Happy Thursday!

Dear Teammates,

It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of one of our own, Maj Abner, a deeply respected Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Maj Abner’s career was marked by dedication, with extensive experience across multiple deployments, and he was just days away from retirement from the U.S. Air Force. His service spanned from being prior enlisted in the Air Force to commissioning in the Navy, and finally, his commissioned service in the Air Force—a journey that showcased his unwavering commitment to his country and to his fellow service members.

His knowledge and experience were invaluable, and his impact on those he served alongside will not be forgotten. Please keep his family in your prayers during this difficult time. We will share funeral arrangements as soon as we receive them.

In solidarity and sympathy.

National Hispanic Heritage Month Sept 15- Oct 15, 2024

Please join the Total Nursing Force in recognizing and celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month. The Department of Defense (DoD) observes National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, 2024. Hispanic Americans have a long history of service, supporting critical military operations both domestically and internationally. This year’s theme, "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together," emphasizes the Latino community’s influence on technological advancements, social reforms, and family and veteran support.
This celebration honors the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans from 20 countries and territories worldwide. This includes all residents — or those with ancestors — from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The celebration's mid-month start date holds a special significance. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua all declared independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. In addition, Mexico and Chile mark their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. This is the perfect moment in time to acknowledge and appreciate the richness of culture and diversity all around us.
Hispanic Heritage Month is important to the nursing career field as it promotes cultural competence, recognizes the contributions of Hispanic nurses, addresses health disparities, supports recruitment and retention efforts, fosters community engagement, and encourages professional development. By embracing and celebrating this month, the nursing profession can better serve the diverse needs of the Hispanic community and improve overall healthcare outcomes.

09/19/2024

The United States Air Force (USAF) celebrates its birthday on September 18, marking the establishment of the service as a separate branch of the U.S. Armed Forces in 1947. This pivotal moment in military history recognized the growing importance of air power in modern warfare and national security. Since its inception, the Air Force has played a crucial role in defending the nation and projecting power around the globe. From strategic bombing campaigns in World War II to the present-day operations in air superiority, intelligence, and reconnaissance, the Air Force has continually adapted to meet the challenges of an ever-evolving threat landscape.

As we honor the Air Force’s birthday, we also pay tribute to the dedicated men and women who have served and continue to serve in this vital branch. Their commitment to excellence, innovation, and courage has not only safeguarded our freedoms but has also contributed to humanitarian efforts and disaster response worldwide. The Air Force’s legacy is built on a foundation of teamwork and resilience, values that have propelled it through decades of service. As we commemorate this significant day, it is essential to recognize the sacrifices and achievements of Air Force personnel, both past and present, who have upheld the proud tradition of defending our skies. Happy Birthday U.S.Air Force #77

09/17/2024

The history of Air Force surgical technologists began in the mid-20th century, during and after World War II, when the demand for efficient surgical care in military settings increased. As the role of surgical assistants became more defined, the Air Force recognized the need for specialized personnel to support surgical teams in operating rooms. By the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Air Force formalized the position of surgical technologists, establishing training programs tailored to the unique challenges of military medical care.

Training for Air Force surgical technologists evolved to include both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, focusing on the skills necessary for assisting in surgeries, maintaining sterile environments, and managing surgical instruments. Over the years, the role expanded beyond the operating room to encompass preoperative and postoperative care, as well as patient education. Today, these professionals are essential members of surgical teams, playing a critical role in providing high-quality healthcare to military personnel in various settings, from bases to combat zones. Their ongoing training and adaptation to advanced medical technologies underscore their importance in the military healthcare system.

On September 11, 2001, the world witnessed a profound tragedy, marked by bravery and selflessness. In the wake of this event, nurses emerged as beacons of hope and resilience. Their dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to care became a testament to the strength of the human spirit. As we honor the memory of that day, we also celebrate the nursing profession’s vital role in healing and supporting communities through the darkest times.
