The CPH Foundation CPHF advances the knowledge and practice of research-proven public health interventions that improve the lives, health and health security of all Americans
This non-profit organization is working to highlight the role disease control and prevention efforts play in our national health system. We have had a great first year and look forward to many more successes in the years to come. Read our 2009 Annual Report to see what we have accomplished - and check back here and on our website to see our breaking news.

Several strategies are utilized to accomplish our mission. These include: 1. Leading educational tours of exemplary public health institutions or agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). 2. Holding educational forums on various public health efforts, initiatives or programs. 3. Tracking and publishing non partisan analyses of government spending on public health initiatives. 4. Spreading awareness of how public health funding is utilized by U.S. states, cities, territories and counties - particularly with respect to those programs funded with the support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – our nation’s principal public health agency. 5. Spreading awareness of how public health funding is utilized by other nations in an effort to highlight best practices. 6. Research the costs and benefits of public health programs to better understand the return on investment. 7. Highlight past successes of public health efforts. 8. Disseminate studies, reports, handouts, publications, books or other documents focused on public health - produced by The CPH Foundation or provided to us by outside organizations.

Mission: The CPH Foundation advances the knowledge and practice of research-proven public health interventions that improve the lives, health and health security of all Americans.

Midterm Elections Move UNSUNG HEROES Reception:

Given the major changes in Washington after the mid-term elections, our partners and Congressional sponsors agreed we should postpone our Unsung Heroes of Public Health Awards Reception until early im 2015. This will allow Congress to complete the "Lame Duck" session - and those we fly to Washington will be able to meet their in-coming members of Congress. Another benefit - you now have until December 15 to complete a nomination. The new reception location and date will be announced shortly. Stay updated here: http://lnkd.in/b8Wi8s

Help Wanted: Unlikely Geniuses To Solve Public Health Problems

USAID - US Agency for International Development recently announced itS #GrandChallenge, a $5 million contest asking innovators to design cooler, more breathable protective gear for healthcare workers fighting #Ebola.

The Grand Challenge is a new tradition in the world of public health: asking anyone (and everyone) to come up with innovations.

OUT OF CONTROL

This excellent article from Sunday's Washington Post is well worth a read. It covers the Ebola outbreak historically and provides comprehensive coverage of possible next steps.

While the story covered budget cuts at the WHO, there was no mention of how US budget cuts to the CDC might have impacted our US response capabilities. Our foundation's earlier blog post highlighted those cuts (http://cphfoundation.tumblr.com/post/81687281895/sebelius-to-congress-cdc-doesnt-need-funding). Massive and bipartisan cuts to the CDC by both the Obama Administration and Congress clearly limited CDC's ability to aid nation's and work in a proactive manner to support prevention efforts BEFORE this outbreak came to pass. It is interesting that the Obama Administration requested, in their 2015 budget request to Congress, a small $30 million fund to proactively develop public health infrastructure in desperate countries. Had that work been funded in 2013, would we be here today?

Interesting graphic.

The Ebola epidemic that has ravaged the western coast of Africa has spread dramatically. Since the first appearence in Guinea in mid-March it has spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and, most recently, Nigeria.

According to public health officials, #California's historic #drought is partly responsible for the recent rise in #WestNile virus infections in the state. http://goo.gl/S15sH9

You'd think that mosquitoes wouldn't like drought, but that's not what's happening in California, where stagnant water breeds more mosquitoes. Cases of West Nile virus have doubled since last year.
