📱🚔 NEW DISTRACTED DRIVING LAW TAKES EFFECT TODAY 🚔📱

Beginning today, June 5, 2026, Pennsylvania’s “Paul Miller’s Law” makes it illegal to hold, touch, or use a hand-held mobile device while operating a motor vehicle.

This is now a PRIMARY OFFENSE, meaning law enforcement officers can stop and cite drivers solely for violating this law.

❌ No holding your phone
❌ No texting
❌ No scrolling social media
❌ No checking emails or messages
❌ No using your phone while stopped at a red light or sitting in traffic

Violations carry:
💲 $50 Fine
💲 Court Costs and Fees (approximately $198.50 total)

The goal of this law is simple: save lives and prevent crashes caused by distracted driving.

Every year, distracted driving contributes to thousands of crashes, injuries, and fatalities across Pennsylvania. No text, notification, or phone call is worth risking your life or the lives of others.

The City of Washington Police Department encourages all motorists to put their phones away before putting their vehicle in motion. If you need to make a call, send a text, or use your device, safely pull over and park first.

📵 Put the phone down.
👀 Stay alert.
🛡️ Protect yourself. Protect others.

For more information on Paul Miller’s Law, visit the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) website.

On June 3, 2026 at 0600 hours, the PSP (Pennsylvania State Police) Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) along with the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General with the assistance of the East Washington Borough Police Department conducted two federal search and arrest warrants at two locations within East Washington Borough.

The first location was at an apartment on North Avenue and the second location was at an apartment located on East Chestnut Street within East Washington Borough. Noise-flash diversionary devices were used. At no point was there a threat to the public. Portions of North Avenue and East Chestnut Street were temporarily shut down
while the warrants were conducted.

The warrants were produced from a collaborative effort from the above stated agencies and part of a ‘sweep’ at various other locations in southwestern Pennsylvania on this date.

It has come to our attention that unfortunately a resident was a victim of a scam today involving “missing jury duty“ and being in contempt of court. The resident received a phone call from a male identifying himself as a Deputy Sheriff. The resident was asked to pay fines and costs by way of bitcoin currency.
Our staff or Deputies will not request anyone to make any arrangements of payments(digital currency, cash, gift cards ) over the phone or electronically, to correct a legal matter. If you receive a phone advising you of a warrant or contempt of court concerns, please hang up immediately and contact your local police agency or county sheriffs office.
