Career Education Colleges and Universities

Career Education Colleges and Universities Career colleges equip millions of students from diverse social and economic backgrounds with access to career-focused learning and the job skills they need for a successful future in the 21st Century workforce.

Career Education Colleges and Universities (CECU) is a voluntary membership organization of accredited, private, postsecondary schools, institutes, colleges and universities. Our members provide students who take different paths to higher education, particularly veterans, working mothers, and parents, with opportunities not available to them at traditional colleges, and we help them open doors to a brighter future by securing employment.

Covid-19 has highlighted the equity gaps that continue to be perpetuated by traditional education. Many students don’t want to pursue a 4-year liberal arts degree. They want a career education program leading to real jobs with real incomes. Now more than ever there needs to be more opportunities for students to gain critical career-ready skills.

People of color, of all incomes, should have choices in higher ed, as well as access to schools that invest in their communities. A school that knows our community can prepare students with the skills that will succeed in our community!

There are a lot of factors that lead individuals away from traditional liberal arts colleges. Nowadays so many young people, people of color, and those with working class roots, look elsewhere for the skills and credentials they need to enter the workforce. Career education schools provide a bridge to a better skill, a better job, a better income, and a real place in the middle class.

Support career education colleges by helping us tell your Congressman that many students from all backgrounds in California depend on career education schools to succeed.

Earlier this summer, Congress provided $1.1 Billion in HEERF grants to our sector. This came after countless hours of negotiations and obstacles fought by CECU’s Government Relations team to keep sector schools included in the overall relief package.

In an effort to showcase how career schools are utilizing those funds to support students and ensure transparency, we are asking for schools to continue the conversation with us through this time of change. Share your challenges. Share your achievements. Share your student stories.

As an example, Education Affiliates surveyed 1,200 students from across the country who had received HEERF grants from their institutions to ask how they used such funds, and provide any comments that described their experiences.

The responses blew us away! Nearly all students used these funds to afford basic needs after set backs from the pandemic.

We know that many of our students across the country are in similar situations and still relying on these funds for survival.

Help us showcase how our schools are supporting students through these challenging times. Together, we can ensure our sector, our schools and our students continue to be included in federal policies of support like this.

This year Career Education Colleges and Universities showed that you can convert a live annual conference to 100% online in a matter of weeks without losing dynamic engagement.

Thanks to all of the presenters, exhibitors and sponsors who made this possible and accessible to all! And a HUGE shout out to Jessica Brown who pushed the barriers of our situation and IT limitations to take this concept from a "forced idea" to create an actual #EVENT!

You can still register to view the Convention from now until June 30 at career.org/convention

In early July 2016, Shelby came and visited Carolina Career College after hearing that Information Technology along with her military background might make a great fit. “Honestly all I could think of was here we go again”, but despite everything in my nature telling me not to go, I went to a meeting to discuss the school and what they had to offer.
