Opinion: Racism is fueling disparities in access to safe water

U.S. Senator Kamala Harris and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta are leading the fight for #WaterJustice, highlighting how everyone has a #RightToWater in their The Mercury News op-ed with some shocking stats:

🏘2+ million people lack reliable running water & sanitation
‼️~ 130 million people got tap water from systems violating federal safety laws [2016-2019]
🚰1 million Californians do not have safe drinking water
👩‍👧‍👦Race almost always determines who has basic plumbing

They also offer solutions:

🚫National moratorium on water shut-offs
💸National water affordability program
📈Invest money into safe water to spur economic growth
⚖️Pass the Water Justice Act - which does all of the above

“This fight for water justice is a fight for environmental justice. It is a fight for climate justice. It is a fight for racial justice.”

The statistics are shocking About 1 million Californians do not have access to clean drinking water.

Congresswoman: ‘we can use the ocean to fight climate change’

The ocean is the powerhouse of the planet.

It modulates our weather and gives oxygen for our lungs. Its marine ecosystems - from coral reefs to wetlands - protect coastal communities from devastating storms, are a source of abundant food and biodiversity, and provide clean water.

It also is a major carbon sink. Almost half of the CO2 pumped into the atmosphere each gets absorbed by the ocean. But the ocean is hitting its limit.

By degrading the ocean & coastal habitats we undermine their ability to protect us and prevent catastrophic damage to our global ecosystem.

In an op-ed for Keys Weekly, Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell shows how we can take action on climate change, protect the ocean, and therefore protect our communities. #OceanClimateAction 🌊

Juneteenth (June 19th) is a day that honors Black freedom and Black resistance, and centers Black people’s unique contribution to the struggle for justice in the U.S. This Juneteenth is a rare moment for communities to proclaim in one voice that Black Lives Matter, and that anything less than justice for all our people will not be tolerated.

Why Every Environmentalist Should Be Anti-Racist

"The longer racism is not addressed, the harder it will be to save the planet, in part because Black activists’ time and energy are being drained."

A must-read from Leah Thomas in Vogue.

As a Black environmentalist, I’ve long wondered: Why is fighting for my humanity considered an optional or special add-on to climate justice?

06/07/2020

A message from LCV President Gene Karpinski:

There has never been a time more urgent to state clearly that Black lives matter. The killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, David McAtee, and George Floyd are tragically just five of millions of lives lost to centuries of systemic racism and racial violence in this country against Black people.

The moment we are in — racial violence, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the climate crisis — has laid bare the systemic and pervasive racism that makes Black communities in our country fear for their families' health, safety, and lives every single day.

The trauma felt by our friends, colleagues, and fellow activists of color is raw and has persisted for far too long. The loss of innocent lives, the lack of justice experienced over and over again, and the cumulative and ongoing toll of fear and racial violence should move us all to outrage and to action.

LCV is joining Black-led racial justice organizations in calling on Congress to take swift and decisive legislative action on a range of policing issues, including use of force, police accountability, racial profiling, militarization, data collection, and training. In the days and weeks ahead, we will be letting you know about other actions we are taking and opportunities for you to support stronger, anti-racist policies and call on leaders to act.

One of the most important things we can all do right now is to support Black-led organizations at the center of this fight for the dignity and safety of Black communities. Here are just a few organizations on the front lines of this work that need our financial support right now:

Black Lives Matter works to organize and mobilize in response to anti-Black violence and structural inequality. Donate here: https://bit.ly/2MzXkaY

Black Visions Collective works to build movements from the ground up with an integrated model to create the conditions for long-term success and transformation. https://bit.ly/2UgIryD

Color Of Change leads campaigns that build real power for Black communities by helping people respond effectively to injustice in the world around us. https://bit.ly/2zXG1hH

Thank you for being a voice for justice at this urgent moment. Racial justice, human dignity, and freedom for Black communities are worth fighting for. We must all do more. The time to act is now.

In solidarity,

Gene Karpinski

General information

Over the last five decades, LCV and our state affiliates, together the Conservation Voter Movement, have fought to protect our Earth and everyone who inhabits it. To do so by working to solve our nation’s biggest environmental challenges,we need political solutions, at all levels of government. LCV brings people together to use their power to influence policy, hold leaders accountable, and elect officials who share our values. We are also committed to building a larger, more active, and more racially diverse movement because, for too long, communities of color have been excluded from environmental politics, and we are committed to fighting for inclusive, just solutions to our environmental challenges. In the end, LCV is working to build a vibrant participatory democracy that protects clean air, clean water, public lands, and a safe climate for everyone. This is what we fight for in Congress. This is what we fight for at the ballot box. This is what we fight for in cities and states across the country. Our Earth is worth fighting for.

Senate Democrats’ political machine has spent more than $15 million to help more moderate Senate candidates defeat progressive primary challengers in the 2020 election cycle. With the help of the party, its major donors, and the Senate Majority PAC (SMP) -- a super PAC funded by labor unions, corporate interests and Wall Street billionaires -- candidates endorsed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee have won contested primaries in four battleground states.
