Developing Effective Messages Means Developing a Deep Understanding of Narrative: An Interview with Scientist-Turned-Filmmaker Randy Olson

"'Science communication'" is almost a contradiction in terms. In a lot of ways, there’s no such thing as 'science' communication. There’s just communication. These principals are universal. If you don't have deep intuition for narrative, you're never going to communicate effectively." - Scientist-turned-filmmaker Randy Olson on the power of narrative communication. Full interview at Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society's blog.

Why the Scariest Nuclear Threat May Be Coming from Inside the White House

A must read on what happens when we ignore the experts. Michael Lewis on the murky future of the Department of Energy.

Ep. 327: Climate Change, Politics, and Wrestling (w/ Aaron Huertas)

Now for something completely different...I did a podcast on political communication and pro-wrestling. It was a lot of fun and the intro of the podcast includes some commentary on climate. To summarize, after Trump posted that pro-wrestling video, I was struck by the amount of commentary that failed to make the obvious connection between pro-wrestling rhetoric and political rhetoric. THEY ARE THE SAME THING. And Trump constantly "breaks kayfabe" in ways that other politicians don't, which is a huge part of his appeal and ability to grab attention. Anyway, wound up talking to a guy who similarly appreciated the link for his podcast. It was a lot of fun! (There's also some profanity in the podcast, FWIW.)

In this installment, Chris is joined by Aaron Huertas to discuss the rhetoric behind climate change & how the Trump presidency can be better understood through the lens of professional wrestling. Science Is Service: The Role of Researchers as Public Advocates

In Undark.org, I lay out a path forward for a grassroots science movement. "Last month, thousands of people marched for science in more than 600 cities and towns globally. It was an amazing public display, but for the march to turn into a successful movement, it has to keep building political power — not just for science and scientific institutions, but for the communities that science serves."

Scientists must recognize that their fight to protect basic research, data transparency, and funding is really about protecting communities.
