The National Aging in Place Council is a membership organization founded on the belief that an overwhelming majority of older Americans want to remain in their homes for as long as possible, but lack awareness of home and community-based services that make independent living possible. NAIPC has created a national forum for individuals from the aging, health care, financial services, legal, design and building sectors to work together to help meet the needs of our growing aging population, so they can continue living in the housing of their choice.

As a retired orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, David Neuman's passion to help people attain, regain, maintain and preserve healthy joint function is paramount.

"One of the most important things to take into consideration for 'working-out' is the expectation of the person. What are their fitness goals and aspirations? To me, the absence of joint pain and the ability to successfully do the things that one desires and things that make the person happy is the goal of an 'exercise' program. 'Exercise' is a vague word and can elicit fear or uncertainty when simply used.

I am a huge proponent of progressing with a routine (joint-health activity or controlled, appropriate exercise routine) that elevates and maintains the qualities of joint function. Some of the tangible qualities of joints are motion, tone, flexibility, strength, endurance and condition. That is, working the muscles to protect the joints (and help people remain active and productive in their livelihood) by doing specific activities and 'exercise' that positively affects the qualities of joint function."

The CDC is now offering an app designed to help individuals who wonder if they're experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. Called "Clara," the program asks a series of questions that include symptoms being experienced, age, geographic location. Based on answers provided, Clara recommends actions to be taken, from calling 911 to staying home and contacting a health care provider.

New Flexibilities Available to People with Medicare:
Medicare telehealth benefits have expanded to include coverage that will enable beneficiaries to receive a wider range of healthcare services from their doctors without having to travel to a healthcare facility.

This provides regulatory flexibility to ensure that all Americans-particularly high-risk individuals-are aware of easy-to-use, accessible benefits that can help keep them healthy while helping to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Prior to this announcement, Medicare was only allowed to pay clinicians for telehealth services such as routine visits in certain circumstances. For example, the beneficiary receiving the services must live in a rural area and travel to a local medical facility to get telehealth services from a doctor in a remote location. In addition, the beneficiary would generally not be allowed to receive telehealth services in their home.

NAIPC MEMBERS IN THE NEWS!

At the beginning of 2020, NAIPC began regularly participating in the Help A Reporter Out (HARO) program – a tool for news people to find sources for their stories quickly.

Participation in the program is a way for NAIPC members to become a source for aging in place industry stories, as well as gain recognition while experiencing a new outlet for educating on aging in place. (See Jan. 31, 2020 NAIPC News.)

SW Riverside chapter member, Fenella Stevens responded to a recent HARO request from Best Company—an independent review site—on seniors and dental insurance. Fenella responded to the query whereby the reporter reached out for a more in-depth interview. As a Medicare specialist who sells both individual dental products to Medicare eligible and pre-65 individuals/families, as well as to dental employers, Fenella’s insight and advice in ”Best Dental Insurance for Seniors: Expert Tips and Advice” offers readers several unique situations in which they might be better off purchasing separate dental insurance. Her desire to contribute is exactly what NAIPC is all about. Advancing and supporting Aging in Place through outreach, advocacy and education.

“I was happy to receive a request where I could provide information and advice,” says Fenella. “It didn’t take any time at all and I was honored that my response was quoted in a Best Company article. When you’ve been in the industry for over 30 years, it’s exciting to be given an opportunity to share one’s knowledge with others in such a public forum, and in doing so, perhaps help seniors work through their dental options.”

HARO requests are sent to all active NAIPC members. Don’t miss your chance to contribute.

In 2015, there were approx. 806,000 adults age 65 and older in Minnesota, making up about 15% of the population. Two decades from now, that population is projected to top 1.3M, and more than one out of every 5 Minnesotans will be an older adult. 20 years from now Minnesota is also expected to hit the peak “retirement- to working-age ratio,” with nearly 2 retirement-age adults for every 5 working-age Minnesotans, compared to the current 1-to-5. (Source: Mncompass.org)

This huge demographic shift will have widespread impact on Minnesota’s economy, healthcare system and social services, and the Minneapolis/St. Paul Chapter of NAIPC is working with local business professionals, community leaders and nonprofits to help. Hummingbird Enterprises LLC plans to develop a 55+ active adult community for Veterans with low to moderate incomes and will be constructing small homes/ “tiny homes” to be purchased by the Veterans on 200 acres in Graysville, Tennessee, through the New Start Program. A part of this community will also be used to house around 40 homeless Veterans. Our company will donate the land for the project and will solicit funding for the construction and furnishing of 20 small homes, with 2 Vets living in each home, from Tennessee businesses, Veteran organizations, citizens, government agencies and various fund-raising campaigns. The estimated cost for this project is $2,800,000- about $70,000 of immediate cost per Veteran. Since the homes will be part of the community property and will be deeded in such a way that they can only be used to house homeless Veterans, they will remain available for homeless Veterans in the future. The Veterans will then have full access to all community amenities and be able to have an active part in community life. We will have a total of between 118 and 120 homesites with a well-developed community life area which will include a large community house, a fitness center, meeting rooms, picnic and outdoor gathering areas, nature trails and a community owned Co-op store. We need a business startup loan for at least $650,000, but $750,000 would be ideal. We could also use a business line of credit of $100,000 to $150,000. We have $130,000 currently for our business checking account (as a loan from us to the business) to start up this project and will set up this account as soon as we get our EIN number. Since we're a startup, I'm not sure when we'll be starting to generate an income yet. These loans would be secured by the 391 acres of the land we are purchasing in Graysville, TN. This land has a brow ridge of over 3000 feet which will provide us initially with at least 9 lots of 5 acres each which are estimated to sell for $125,000 each. For Phase 1 we will have 29 2-5 acre lots for sale at approximately $20,000-$35,000 each, 9 5- acre brow ridge lots for sale at approximately $125,000 each and 10-20 business lot sites for sale at approximately $60,000 each. The community will be comprised of 200 acres for Phase 1, including around 60 acres of community held open land, with 191 acres available for phase 2 should we wish to expand this community. We will also be select timbering the 391 acres which will provide at least another $260,000, as a conservative estimate. However, the timbering project will take about a year to be completed. The sale of the 38 lots and timber income will be used to pay off our initial business funding. I’m not sure yet if this is in an “Opportunity Zone” or not, as I couldn’t really tell from the map I found online. I sure am hoping it is!! We will seek further funding in approximately one year to build a community life area which will include a large community house, a fitness center, meeting rooms, picnic and outdoor gathering areas, nature trails and a community owned Co-op store. The costs for repayment of these funds will be prorated per lot and included in the HOA fees collected monthly. We will also have approximately 20 Tiny Home lots for rent at $300 per month each (not including utilities) and 40 RV lots for rent at $450 per month each (including utilities). Each of these lots will also be paying the monthly HOA fees. We will seek additional funding for these projects in 2 years. The tentative HOA fee will be between $350 & $450 per month per lot, to pay for community management, maintenance, taxes, insurance, utilities, trash pickup, the long-term maintenance/improvement fund and operating expenses and to pay back the loans for construction of the community house, fitness center and outdoor areas, tiny home rental lots and the RV park. If you'd be interested in joining our community or in donating to the fund to house homeless Veterans, please email us at: [email protected].
The #CLIMBER is a world-first, revolutionary escalator for home use. It is designed to assist people who have trouble climbing or descending stairs, thus allowing them to continue living in the comfort of their beloved home and therefor preserve their quality of life. The Climber was granted by the Israeli Innovation Authority and carries a European CE mark. CLIMBER has patents pending in Israel and PCT in the US. We are currently starting the national stage in the US, Canada, and the EU including the UK. Even before the Corona pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that more than 90% of seniors around the world Ageing-in-Place and wish to keep living in their own homes and communities. The current total global market for stairlifts alone is estimated at approximately $1.6 billion and expected to grow (approx. 10% per year, for the coming years). At this point, we wish to add a strategic investor to allow us to increase our sales efforts in Israel as well as expand to international markets. More details and contact information:

I am a disabled senior. Trying to make a LONG story short, I'm in debt about $10,000 from VITAL house repairs and medical situations and bills. I'm DESPERATELY trying to stay in my house because even its location is a handicap accessibility accommodation for my disabilities. I'm doing my best to find some way to do that. Can you help me to stay in my house? . It's funny, i'm a residential architectural designer/drafter who has been a STRONG advocate for Aging in Place for years, and here i am, unable to do just that. . I wish i had a way of selling my house plans and Tiny House plans --- perhaps i'd be able to stay in my home ... or other ideas.

FREE BOOK OFFER from 5/21 to 5/25! Now is a good time to check out my novel, GRIEFWRITING, a frank and honest discussion about caregiving, bereavement, and the redefinition of the self after loss. Its characters come together in a therapeutic writing course, which promotes their healing and offers opportunities for renewal. Many readers have said GRIEFWRITING was cathartic for them, validating their feelings, making them feel less alone, and giving them hope for the future. Would love to hear that you read the book and found it helpful as well.
