Mayor Bowser Names Peter Newsham as Interim Police Chief
Longtime deputy and a 27-year MPD veteran to fill in for retiring Chief Cathy Lanier

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, Mayor Bowser announces that a longtime deputy to Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier, Peter Newsham, will fill the position she is vacating on an interim basis effective September 17, 2016. Mr. Newsham joined MPD in 1989 and has served as Assistant Chief of Police since 2002.

“Like Chief Lanier, Peter has deep roots serving the District and believes in the power of building relationships with communities as the best way to deter and solve crime,” said Mayor Bowser. “He has served the people of the District of Columbia for almost three decades and in that time has demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the District and to its residents. He is experienced, smart, compassionate, and most importantly, he knows what it means to walk a beat, to manage a team, and to serve the residents of the District of Columbia. I have known him for more than a decade; he is a police officer of the highest caliber and is extremely qualified to serve as the Interim Chief of Police while we conduct the search for a permanent replacement.”
Newsham has served as Assistant Chief at MPD for 14 years and currently heads the Investigative Services Bureau, which is responsible for investigating violent, property, sexual assault, and narcotic crimes. He previously oversaw MPD’s internal affairs and disciplinary review offices for four years. He also oversaw the northern regional command for three years, which included the Second, Third, and Fourth police districts. Newsham has a law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law and is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia and Maryland.

A search for internal and external candidates to fill the position permanently has already begun and a job announcement will be published in the coming days. After winnowing the list of qualified candidates, a small group of community stakeholders will be involved in vetting final candidates.

08/16/2016

Today at 2:00 p.m. Mayor Muriel Bowser will host a press conference at Metropolitan Police Department Headquarters to announce Police Chief Lanier’s retirement from MPD.

The next phase of WMATA’s SafeTrack plan to directly affect the District of Columbia will take place from August 1 through August 7. During Surge 6, trains on Metrorail’s Red Line will single track between the Takoma station in the District and the Silver Spring station in Maryland. This will have a major impact on approximately 94,000 weekday trips.

There will be a reduction in rush hour service of approximately 75 percent between Silver Spring and the NoMa-Gallaudet station and commuters are advised to seek other routes within or outside the Metrorail system during the peak periods.

Those who opt to use the Red Line during Surge 6 should expect crowded conditions during peak times and longer wait times. Trains will be running every six minutes from Shady Grove to NoMa and every 12 minutes from Glenmont to Grosvenor.

There will be additional Metrobus service on the S9, 80, and P6 routes. WMATA will not provide a “bus bridge” because there is limited single track service. DDOT and WMATA urge commuters to use alternative modes of travel during the morning and evening peak periods.

Statement by the President

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 27, 2016

Statement by the President

I commend the District of Columbia, Mayor Muriel Bowser, and the Council of the District of Columbia for raising the District's minimum wage. Since my first call to raise the wage in 2013, 18 states and D.C. have taken action - action that will help over 7 million American workers. In addition, nearly 50 cities and counties - as well as many of our leading businesses - have acted on their own to boost wages for thousands more workers. That's progress. But we must continue to build on that progress - because no American working full-time in this country should struggle to make ends meet. That's why as long as I hold this office, I will continue to fight for hardworking Americans. And I will keep urging Congress to raise the federal minimum wage, so that all Americans have a fair shot to get ahead. America deserves a raise.
