Center for Green Schools

Center for Green Schools Healthy, high-performing schools for all within this generation.
Across America, the next generation of leaders walks into classrooms, libraries, cafeterias and lecture halls that are compromising their ability to learn, not enhancing it. The Center was established to change that. We believe that everyone, from the kindergartner entering the classroom for the first time to the Ph.D. student performing research in a lab, should have the ability to learn in green buildings.

"Leading by Example – Mobilizing for the Next Generation of Schools"

With evidence of climate change becoming ubiquitous and youth leaders mobilizing for climate action, the way we design, build, operate and renovate school buildings provides an ideal venue for communities to lead by example and mobilize for the next generation of schools. The concept of developing zero energy schools has been in practice for over a decade, with over 200 zero energy educational buildings built or in process across the U.S and Canada. The next generation of these high-performance schools, can save districts money and battle climate change, while providing ideal space for future-focused youth leadership and STEAM-driven education. Getting to zero with school buildings can enhance the learning environment and be delivered on conventional budgets and schedules. This presentation will place school buildings in the context of climate mobilization, youth leadership and describe opportunities for school districts to lead by example – working with their communities to deliver on the potential of schools as a focal point of community climate action.

Schools Have Lost $16B in Capital Funds Since the Great Recession. Those Buildings Are in Trouble — & That Means Problems for Students

Infrastructure needs are so intense, particularly in rural and urban areas without strong local tax bases that can compensate for the lack of state funding, that advocates describe the situation as a national crisis.

The aging school buildings of Arizona’s Glendale Elementary School District were no match for the late summer monsoons of 2016. With foundations made brittle after years of prolonged water damage, flooding seeped in. A structural engineer feared that walls would give way. School leaders scrambled ...
