A message form Saotome Sensei!

I hope that all Aikidoka everywhere in the world stay safe. Aiki is the ability to recognize circumstances around you and adapt. For example, I hear you are using new technology to keep to keep connected. Very good!

I am very proud that my students have put safety first and closed their dojo. Taking care of the community was always in the heart of O’Sensei. If we help each other, we will get through this and return to our usual practice.

Please know that Patricia, my wife, and I are safe and taken care of here in Sarasota. I hope to see all of you soon.

The ASU Grant Committee has received a few excellent applications for summer camp grants. There is still time to submit a grant application. If you or someone you know needs some financial help getting to camp please let them know about this excellent opportunity. I would expect our funds to be allocated by the last week of March. Grants applications are not complete until we receive the student app and dojo cho supporting app.

Summer Camp is just two weeks away! Join us for five days of intensive Aikido training. In addition to Saotome Sensei, the fantastic lineup of instructors will include Ania Small Sensei from Aikido of Maine.

In this blog post from last year, Small Sensei discusses the physical and psychological aspects of stress, and how we can address them in the context of training. Enjoy!

“Saotome Sensei often says, when emphasizing the martial aspect of Aikido: ‘you need tension, and intention’. I understand it as alertness, readiness, attention and adaptability. I also believe that it is directly connected to relaxation. In other words, being able to relax physically and mentally, allows us to stay present and respond to an attack. Aikido provides a great opportunity to practice relaxation and alertness on the mat. It provides a laboratory for transforming our habitual reactions and developing greater relaxation, awareness and adaptability in everyday lives.”

How To Train For A Million Years, Part 1

As human beings, we have finite limits to the number of years we can train. This article is part 1 of insights from Shihan Mitsugi Saotome, on how to tap into an understanding of human evolution and instinctual response to overcome the limits of incremental training.
