As the partial federal shutdown reaches record length, Rock Creek Conservancy is working hard to continue to protect the natural resources in the national park that are normally managed by more than 50 staff experts. This is a great reminder of why the Conservancy’s dual functions - park partner and watershed protector - are so intertwined: what we do outside of park boundaries is connected and can benefit (or harm) the resources inside the park.

During the shutdown, the balance between visitor enjoyment and resource protection is even more pronounced, but we encourage all of you to use this time to consider a New Year’s Resolution that will help the park and the Creek every day of the year. The Conservancy shared our concerns with National Park Service leadership and our elected officials last week and hopes for a swift resolution to this situation.

1) Volunteer for the MLK Weekend of Service

It's official. The continued government shutdown means that all Rock Creek Park volunteer events will be located outside the park. This doesn't mean they will be any less impactful! We encourage you to find a site near you and sign up to serve your community on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Find a Site Near You

2) Start in your own backyard
The shutdown means we can’t hold our regular volunteer events in the park. The lack of staff on duty in the park concerns the Conservancy due to the long-term effects it is likely to have on park resources, including Rock Creek. This provides a great opportunity to think about the ways we can help the park from outside its boundaries.

In the following blog, discover several actions you can take in your own neighborhood to continue to help Rock Creek during the shutdown (and every day, even after the government is open again.)

3) Support our park
In times like these, our relationship with Rock Creek Park is more important than ever. As we focus our current conservation efforts outside of the park, we also want to be prepared for when the shutdown ends to support Rock Creek Park staff in repairing the damages sustained inside the park over the course of the shutdown.
