Today marks the one-year anniversary of the death of Brian Bailey, 46, at his home in the Rutland County town of Brandon.

Mr. Bailey was found deceased at about 7 a.m. May 24, 2025, in his home on Champearl Road. The Vermont State Police is continuing to investigate this death as suspicious. The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington determined the cause of Mr. Bailey’s death was a gunshot wound, while the manner of death was listed as undetermined.

Detectives have worked closely with the Rutland County State’s Attorney’s Office and specialized units within the state police, including the Technology Investigation Unit, as the case has progressed.

VSP encourages anyone with information that could potentially be of assistance to investigators to call Detective Sgt. Jeffrey Stephenson of the Major Crime Unit via the Rutland Barracks at 802-773-9101.

Today marks the anniversary of the discovery of the remains of 16 year-old Heidi Martin, who was found on a logging road in Hartland on May, 21st 1984. She had been reported missing the evening before, after not returning from jogging.

Her death was determined to be a homicide and remains unsolved. Anyone with any information on this, or any other unsolved homicide, is asked to contact the our Major Crime Unit.

On May 15th, 1988 - human remains were found just south of the Canadian border in Canaan. They were subsequently identified as Chantel Saurial, who had been reported missing from Montreal in 1987. Her death was determined to be a homicide, and remains unsolved.
