Congratulations to President Elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Vice President Elect Kamala D. Harris!

This momentous occasion was made possible by the deliberate efforts of Black women and a unified coalition of Divine Nine members who understood the significance of this election.

Now is the time to continue in the spirit of unity as we work towards a more perfect union.

Today history has been made with the election of Kamala D. Harris as Vice President of the United States. In the year we commemorate the centennial of the 19th Amendment, there is no tribute more fitting than having the first woman and the first Black and Asian American woman to be elected into our nation's highest office.

As we celebrate Kamala Harris, we also honor the Black women who led the way over 100 years ago and the Black women voters and organizers of today who made progress possible. Black women organized and undeniably helped to drive and steer voters' consciousness toward the joyful hope and humanitarian reset necessary for the "soul of our nation." There is power in our sisterhood, and the country now knows the power of our voice.

The legacy of women like Fannie Lou Hamer and Shirley Chisholm stand guard in the power of this historic moment, no longer in the shadows of American history. Kamala, our Divine Nine sister, we honor you as you have made true herstory.

Waterloo Census Self-Response Rates Still Low In Black Neighborhoods | Iowa Starting Line

I'm proud of our Chapter's "Waterloo Counts: Census and Voter Registration Drive-Up" on Saturday. We wish we had more time to get people counted, but we will continue to strive toward reaching the goal of improving the quality of lives in our town.

Waterloo leaders are encouraging all its residents to respond to the Census so their neighborhoods get adequate funding.

Watch on Wednesday, September 30th.

If our votes didn't count, why are they working so hard to suppress them!?!

League of Women Voters of Metro Des Moines will be sponsoring a virtual program on “Democracy in the Time of COVID-19” on Wed., Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m. This program is free and open to the public though pre-registration is required.

RIGGED: The Voter Suppression Playbook is an award-winning documentary which exposes the nefarious tactics used to suppress the vote and serves to spark discussion on the actions needed to protect our democracy. Shot principally during the 2016 election, the film tracks a systematic, decade-long effort to reverse the impact of the growing demographic tide of non-white and younger voters who helped elect President Barack Obama in 2008. It details a variety of voter suppression “plays,” or tactics, ranging from the purging of voting rolls and passing of new, restrictive voter ID laws to gerrymandering and voter intimidation. The film includes revealing interviews detailing how the voter suppression game is played as well as cogent insights from leading voting rights advocates and law professors. It is narrated by Tony and Emmy award-winning actor Jeffrey Wright.

After a showing of RIGGED, there will be a panel discussion and Q and A regarding the current fight against voter suppression in Iowa. Panelists include Mac Heller, the Executive Producer of RIGGED, the documentary film; Mark Stringer, Executive Director of American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa; and Deidre DeJear, Vice President of League of Women Voters of Metro Des Moines. Moderating the discussion will be Teresa Bomhoff, President of League of Women Voters of Metro Des Moines.

This program will be presented via Zoom Webinar. For those interested, contact Karen Person at [email protected]. Many don't know how instrumental Deltas were in the suffrage movement. Bravely, against threats of violence and disdain, their first act of public service was in the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession in Washington, DC.

"Black women often had to march separately from white women in suffrage parades. In addition, when Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony wrote the History of Woman Suffrage in the 1880s, they featured white suffragists while largely ignoring the contributions of African American suffragists. Though Black women are less well remembered, they played an important role in getting the Fifteenth and Nineteenth Amendments passed." (https://www.nps.gov/articles/black-women-and-the-fight-for-voting-rights.htm).

Beverly E. Smith, National President and CEO of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated will share the historic merit of our participation in the Suffrage Movement as a Special Guest Panelist of the national Zoom event, Remember The Ladies Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, Saturday, August 15th at 4:00 p.m. #DST1913

Chance to win $100 credit toward your MidAmerican Energy utility bill! Waterloo Counts: Census & Voter Registration Drive-Up on Saturday, September 26 at Lincoln Park in Waterloo. We have less than two weeks left to try to reach renters, immigrants, and other members of historically undercounted groups who are not likely to fill out a census form on their own. In partnership with other local organizations, this event will allow us to maximize participation and contribute to a more complete and accurate census count of Waterloo’s residents.
