Check out this great share from our friends at Wehr Nature Center!!!

Today's Wehr Wow is the Milkweed Bug. One of our naturalists found these friends on some milkweed last week.

Milkweed is not just a great food plant for the caterpillars of the monarch butterfly. It feeds many types of creatures such as the Milkweed Tussock Caterpillar, Milkweed Beetle, and the Milkweed Bug (a close relative of the Box Elder Bug).

The bright red-orange and black colors serve as a warning to any would be predators. The bodies of milkweed bugs contain toxic compounds derived from the sap which they suck from milkweed just like the monarch butterfly.

Leave the Leaves! | Xerces Society

😊🍁🍂 By leaving the leaves you are providing winter shelter for many creatures. Here is a lovely article from the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation on the benefits of leaving the leaves for wildlife.

One of the most valuable things you can do to support pollinators and other invertebrates is to provide them with the winter cover they need in the form of fall leaves and standing dead plant material. Frequently however, this is the hardest pill for gardeners to swallow.

Milwaukee County Parks

Last year Indigenous people's Park was named to honor the original inhabitants of the land in Milwaukee County, and while a few park names are reminders of the tribes who lived here, including Chippewa, Algonquin and Menomonee, many other historical reminders have unfortunately been destroyed. Historical records indicate that over 200 native American burial mounds once existed in the county, now only a handful remain, including one in Lake Park. A Milwaukee Journal article in 1923 details how several other mounds in Lake Park were destroyed during the park's development in the early 20th Century. Traces of indigenous villages and trails were also destroyed during early city development - the map below shows some of the original settlements and burial mound sites. 🚨 Golf Update 🚨
The Whitnall Park's golf course was vandalized this weekend. As it stands right now, the 13th and 14th greens are closed with a temporary greens cut in the fairway. The front nine and the other seven back nine greens are open for play.

Our amazing golf team is hard at work to get the course repaired and ready to go for next season. Unfortunately, that means that the greens will not be in good condition for the rest of fall 2020 and potentially into next spring 2021. Our goal is to get them healed for the 2021 summer season.

With a walk through Lake Park added!
Dirt bike and 4-wheeler tearing up the newly-graded, freshly-seeded soccer fields on the north (Lisbon Avenue) side of Washington Park. This is in addition to the damage they caused, which I reported on September 16th, which doesn't appear to have been addressed.
Bars and restaurants ... and beer gardens, like this one in the County's Estabrook Park ... are doing anything they can to extend the outdoor season this year:
Hi there Milwaukee County Parks. 4 1/2 years ago in early 2016, you held a Disc Golf appreciation night, and during this event you told a crowd of about 100 or so, that the following year (2017), you would be using the Pay to Play funds to install brand new concrete teepads at both Dretzka Park and Brown Deer park disc golf courses. Here we are in 2020, and nothing has been done nor has anything been talked about when you might be taking on this task. I understand that before Pay to Play, there wasn't much being done by the County, and it was mostly volunteer work done by the local disc golfers, but since we have been paying to play for the last 5 years, I am wondering if our money is going to be used to get the new teepads installed within the next few years, or if it will be in the next decade. I hope someone will respond, but I'm not holding my breath. Thank you for your time.

A walk this morning (August 22, 2020) in Estabrook Park was like taking a vacation. I felt like I was far from the city.
Health and well being are such an important part of the parks mission. It would be really great if the Milwaukee County Parks could help struggling small gyms and yoga studios during this pandemic by allowing/granting permits to these groups for outdoor classes. We need to support wellness during these difficult times. If drinking at beer gardens is supported why not exercise as well?
Just went back to the Humboldt beer garden for the first time this year. Great job! Love the fact that the roads are closed off to cars and the new location of the tables.
