On August 3rd, Wehr Nature Center posted information on the Federally Endangered Rusty Patched Bumblebee.
Today we wanted to share the Midwest Plant Guide which suggests different species that provide good forage for the Rusty Patched Bumblebee.
Please keep in mind that these plants will also encourage other pollinators to visit your space as well.

Let's play a little game of "Bird P**p or Moth?" πŸ˜†πŸ€£

If you guessed that these two creatures are moths, you are correct. Moths have some amazing adaptations such as large eyespots, the capability of jamming bat sonar, and yes, even looking like bird p**p.

The Pearly Wood Nymph and Beautiful Wood Nymph are some of the best bird p**p mimicking moths out there. (Click on the following photo for ID of each one, notice how the Beautiful Wood Nymph has small circles on the side vs the Pearly Wood Nymph). πŸ˜€

Our Natural Areas team has been working hard to identify the sedge species in our Park system this season. Although they may be easily overlooked, sedges are an important food source for wildlife including caterpillars, birds, and small mammals. Here is a lineup of some of the sedges we have encountered so far.

Did you know wood ducks have been known to nest above sedges, so that the fledglings have a soft landing pad when they are learning to fly?

The most common lady beetle you are likely to find is the nonnative Asian lady beetle. But North America is home to many other native species (almost 500!).

Take the convergent lady beetle. You can tell this species from its nonnative counterpart by the distinct white edging on the pronotum (the spot just behind the head and in front of the reddish abdomen). The Asian lady beetle has much more white behind its head. 🐞

Monarch Tagging Kit | Monarch Watch

In the state of Wisconsin, we have roughly 150 species of butterflies, but none have captured the hearts of so many people as much as the Monarch Butterfly. Soon, these amazing butterflies will make the migratory journey to Mexico where they will spend their winter in the trans volcanic mountains. A Community Science project called Monarch Watch has been monitoring monarch butterflies since the early 1990s, in order to better understand their migration route and monitor their populations. Anyone can become a community scientist through Monarch Watch and help "tag" monarchs. Monarch Tagging season is right around the corner and you may be interested in purchasing your own tagging kit:

Help tag monarch butterflies and take part in tracking their incredible migration by purchasing a tagging kit from Monarch Watch.

Just a heads up. While I'm sure it was well intentioned, some group of individuals vandalized the trail that leads down the bluff to the lake in Warnimont Park near the Kelly Senior Center. I'm assuming it was an attempt to improve on the trail, which isn't ok even if they knew what they were doing (they didn't), since it's a State Natural Area. A 'large' number of Dwarf Junipers were mutilated, & for some strange reason even those some distance from the trail itself, others have brush piled up on top of them. On the plus side, it appears they removed litter from the beach. Maybe some signage not to tamper with the bluff or designating the fact that it's a State Natural Area would help prevent this sort of thing in the future.
I just heard the lake front fireworks is canceled this July 3rd. 2021. The parks do not have enough hired workers to take care of the need. I think many of us would like to volunteer and help out the event. Volunteering for this event would work. Baby Boomers and other volunteers would help. πŸ˜β€πŸ‘
I'm deeply saddened today - I frequent Greenfield Park and I like many other photographers enjoy photographing the herons. Today as you can see there were 2 and now there is one. Fishing line claimed the life of one of these amazing birds. Can you imagine the pain and suffering this bird endured trying to set himself free; the wing was torn from the body in the struggle. You can see the entanglement above . IT's time for action ; there needs to be receptacles for fishing line placed throughout the park. I will contact the park system on Tuesday. There is also a need for park lovers to band together and help remove the fishing line and bobbers from the park. I will be going out tomorrow morning and see what I can remove from shore. If anyone is interested in helping please show between 9-11. I will go again next Saturday/Sunday as well. If you have a kayak and are willing to bring that to the lagoon you will be able to help tremendously. Feel free to PM me. Help save our wildlife!

Hey y'all the play area at the Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee operated by the Milwaukee County Parks department needs some TLC. Today, there were dirty diapers in the street, trash everywhere and someone dumped charcoals in the sewer drain. Pics below. County Supervisor Felesia Martin
