It is with great honor that the Wellsville Fire Protection District nominates Captain Jeff Moore as our 2026 Old Thrashers’ Hometown Hero.

Tragically, Captain Moore passed away on August 3, 2026. Since joining the Wellsville Fire Protection District in 1992, Jeff dedicated more than three decades of service to his community. In addition to serving as a firefighter, he was also a First Responder and a former EMT with the Montgomery County Ambulance District.

Above all else, Jeff was a devoted husband and father. His son, Kelby, is proudly following in his footsteps by serving as a firefighter, continuing the legacy of service that meant so much to Jeff.

Jeff also honorably served his country in the United States Army. He was a man who believed in hard work, serving others, and always putting his family first. Jeff also enjoyed mentoring and supporting youth through 4-H, sharing his knowledge and encouraging the next generation.

Captain Jeff Moore dedicated his life to serving his country, his community, and his family. His selflessness, leadership, and unwavering commitment to helping others left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

For these reasons, it is our privilege and honor to nominate Captain Jeff Moore as the 2026 Old Thrashers’ Hometown Hero.

As part of the Old Thrashers’ Hometown Hero program, each participating agency raises funds in support of its nominee. The agency that raises the most receives the Hometown Hero title, and all proceeds raised through the contest are awarded to that agency. The winner will be announced on August 22, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. during the 49th Annual Old Thrashers at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

Should Captain Jeff Moore be selected as the 2026 Hometown Hero, the Wellsville Fire Protection District has committed to donating all proceeds received to the Moore family to help support them during this difficult time.

If you would like to support Captain Moore’s nomination and his family, donations toward this title may be given to any firefighter or while at the Montgomery County Old Threshers Association.

With this said, several agencies have announced their intention to give to the same cause as us, honoring Captain Jeff Moore and his family. Words can’t express our gratitude and appreciation that you’ve shown, and continue to show.

Today from 3-6 pm at the Lutheran Church Hall is visitation for Captain Jeff Moore.

At 6 pm the procession will travel southbound on Hwy. 19 from the hall.

We’ll be stopping in front of the Wellsville Firehouse for a tribute then proceeding to the Wellsville Cemetery. This tribute may include an aircraft depending on weather and call volume. We’re urging any drone operators to use extreme caution. Also, the tribute will involve the outdoor notification system and its loud - use caution if standing nearby.

We invite the public to pay tribute during the service. Thank you everyone for all the support and love shown to the Moore Family.

Captain Moore proudly served the Wellsville Fire Protection District (MO) since 1992, dedicating more than three decades of service to protecting our community. His commitment, leadership, and friendship left a lasting impact on the members of our department and the countless lives he touched throughout his career. Captain Moore was also a military veteran.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Services are pending with Myers Funeral Home, Wellsville, MO.

***Today (Tuesday), August 4, 2026, at or around 2:30 p.m., we will be escorting Captain Moore from Montgomery through Wellsville. We should be in Wellsville by around 2:40 p.m. We invite our community to join us in paying tribute to Captain Moore by safely lining the procession route (from Schlanker Funeral home to north on Highway 19) beginning around 2:30 p.m. A simple wave, salute, or moment of silence is a meaningful way to honor a firefighter who dedicated so much to others.***

Rest easy, Captain. Your watch is over. We have it from here.

Traffic Advisory – Hwy. 19 🚧

Beginning tomorrow (07/28/2026) at 6:00 a.m., Hwy. 19 between East Water Street and Southeast/Northeast Street will be reduced to one lane of traffic while the City of Wellsville repairs a sewer main.

🚦 Traffic will be controlled by a flagger, so please expect delays and use caution when traveling through the area.

The lane closure will remain in effect until the repairs are completed.

🚨 EXTREME HEAT WARNING 🚨

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for our area beginning 11:00 AM Sunday and continuing through 9:00 PM Monday.

🌡️ Heat index values could reach up to 111°F, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.

Please take this warning seriously:
💧 Drink plenty of water—even if you don’t feel thirsty.
❄️ Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
☀️ Avoid prolonged time in the sun, especially during the hottest part of the day.
👕 Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
⏰ If you must work outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned area.
👶 Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle—not even for a minute.
❤️ Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone without reliable air conditioning.

⚠️ Know the signs of heat-related illness.

* Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, cool clammy skin.
* Heat Stroke: High body temperature, confusion, loss of consciousness, hot dry skin or profuse sweating.

🚑 Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 9-1-1 immediately.

July 19, 2026 - During the evening hours, Wellsville firefighters responded to a residence within the city limits for a smoke investigation. Upon arrival, firefighters determined the source was an electrical issue. Thankfully, the homeowner was home, and no fire had started.

Here’s the interesting part…..the homeowner said their pet cat alerted them to an unusual smell, prompting them to investigate. That quick reaction may have prevented a much more serious situation.

It’s a great reminder to always pay attention to anything out of the ordinary—whether it’s an unfamiliar smell, a smoke alarm, or even a pet acting differently. Early detection can make all the difference.
