State Representative Noah Arbit, a proud West Bloomfield native, is serving his second term in the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 20th House District, which includes all of West Bloomfield, the eastern half of Commerce Township, the cities of Keego Harbor, Orchard Lake and Sylvan Lake, and the northwestern-most corner of Bloomfield Township. Representative Arbit’s top policy p

riorities include:

1) Tackling Michigan’s mental health crisis impacting kids, seniors, and everyone in between.
2) Protecting our inland lakes, wetlands, and climate.
3) Strengthening consumer protection laws.
4) Combating gun violence, hate crimes, and extremism.
5) Cutting red tape to support dynamic small businesses, reduce “brain drain,” and make Michigan a destination state where talented people can find world-class opportunities, raise their families, and thrive. Since taking office in January 2023, Representative Arbit has worked relentlessly to bring passionate, principled, and forward-thinking leadership to the people of West Bloomfield, Commerce and the Lakes. He has emerged as the state’s foremost leader in combating rising hate crimes, successfully passing his Michigan Hate Crime Act and Institutional Desecration Act — historic, landmark legislation strengthening protections and penalties for violent hate crimes committed against Michiganders, as well as for houses of worship in Michigan facing rising attacks. Representative Arbit grew up on the east side of West Bloomfield, attending Bloomfield Hills Schools, the Frankel Jewish Academy, and Temple Israel, and has been involved in a number of community organizations, including serving on the West Bloomfield Diversity Task Force. He graduated with a degree in comparative politics and Jewish studies from Wayne State University. Prior to his service in the Legislature, Representative Arbit worked on several political campaigns, worked for the state House, for Gov. Whitmer, the National Council on Soviet Jewry, and founded the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus to take on antisemitism and hate in the wake of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. He also served as Director of Communications at the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, where he organized the Prosecutor’s first-ever Racial Justice Advisory Council. With his first election in November 2022, Representative Arbit became only the second Democrat to represent the West Bloomfield and Commerce area in the state House since before the Civil War.

In my opinion, the problem with data centers isn't really data centers themselves, but the fact that by going out of your way to welcome them, you are also surrendering to the unabated and total AI-ification of our society and economy. Meanwhile, literacy collapses.

There are amazing use cases for AI, of course, such as discovering new drugs and materials that could transform the world and improve humanity. Unfortunately, our society does not seem resilient enough to assimilate those benefits without also succumbing to the worst externalities of AI… outsourcing all critical thinking and artistic endeavors to a machine and an algorithm is actually very bad for human civilization!!!

Any massive construction project will bring some jobs. It’s a question of whether we are thinking through what it means to support the AI-ification of the economy and society. We weren’t ready for the way social media upended news, culture, elections, social trust, and we’re certainly not ready for how AI will turbocharge these things. Everyone is saying “well we can’t stop AI.” And I don’t think we should stop it. But I think slowing down and having intentional policies to help shape adoption, culture, and usage would be a lesson well-learned from the failures of grappling with social media.

Big news for WB!

The President is stealing $2 billion dollars of OUR TAXPAYER MONEY to pay off domestic terrorists. I don’t want to hear any Republican politician ever talk about “waste, fraud, and abuse” ever again.

It’s hard to feel excited about being featured in the New York Times this week when the subject matter is so personally devastating. But I hope people, especially people who aren’t Jewish, can read the piece and understand how their overheated rhetoric may be contributing to a permissive environment for anti-Jewish extremism. A society in which Jews are hounded out of public life is a society that is not free. I will continue to represent my constituents to the best of my ability.

I’m introducing legislation amending the Michigan Constitution to eliminate party conventions and nominate candidates for Attorney General and Secretary of State through partisan primaries like we do every other office. Enough with these archaic, corrupt, and disorganized conventions.
