On a powerful morning at West Haven High School, reality was brought to the forefront in a way no classroom ever could.

Students gathered not for a lesson in textbooks—but for a lesson in life.

A full-scale mock crash demonstration unfolded before them, a coordinated effort involving all three West Haven Fire Department districts, working side by side with West Haven Police Department, American Medical Response of New Haven, West Haven Professional 911 Dispatchers - IAFF Local 5127, and community partners including West Haven Funeral Home and Bruneau’s Garage Inc..

Together, they transformed a school parking lot into a scene no one ever wants to encounter—yet one that happens far too often.

The message was clear.

The consequences of impaired driving… distracted driving… reckless decisions behind the wheel… are not theoretical. They are immediate. They are devastating. And too often—they are final.

The West Haven Fire Department is incredibly grateful to Pestsmart for their generous donation of stuffed animals that brought joy to our West Haven elementary students this holiday season. With the dedicated support of IAFF Local 1198, we were able to distribute these special gifts to children throughout our community, creating moments of happiness during the holidays. This partnership exemplifies the spirit of community care that defines the West Haven Fire Department—always looking for ways to serve our residents beyond emergency response. Thank you to Pestsmart for investing in our children and to Local 1198 for your continued commitment to serving West Haven families. These stuffed animals represent more than just gifts; they're symbols of a community that looks out for one another, especially during the holiday season when that care means the most. We're proud to serve a community where businesses and first responders come together to support our youngest residents…

Deputy Chief William Johnson IV has officially become the longest-serving member in the history of the West Haven Fire Department — a milestone that carries not only immense pride, but deep family meaning. In doing so, he surpasses the record previously held by his father, the late Chief of Department William Johnson Jr., who dedicated over 40 years of his life to the City of West Haven, serving from 1966 until his retirement in 2007.

Chief Johnson IV’s fire service story began more than four decades ago when he joined West Haven Hook & Ladder Company #1 in 1981, following in the footsteps of his father and continuing a proud family tradition of leadership, loyalty, and community service. From his date of hire in 1985 to his rise through the ranks as Lieutenant in 2001, Day Captain in 2020, and Deputy Chief in 2021, his career has been defined by steady leadership, professionalism, and a tireless dedication to the people of West Haven.

Our Fourth Annual Public Safety Expo was a great success!

We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to our partners across the City of West Haven — including the Allingtown and West Shore Fire Districts, West Haven Police Department, Public Safety Dispatch, Health Department, Emergency Management Office, Civilian Emergency Response Team, Public Works Department, as well as the UNH Fire Science and EMS Clubs — for helping make this an enjoyable and engaging experience for all.

We also wish to thank Mayor Dorinda Borer, Beth Sabo, and all members of the West Haven Mayor’s Office for their continued support and collaboration.

Finally, to all the residents who joined us, thank you for being part of this special day. We truly hope this year’s Expo was as memorable and meaningful for you as it was for us.

Last night, we had the great opportunity to honor three wonderful contributors to our department at our annual Charles N. Davidson awards ceremony. Lieutenant Joseph Bruneau, retired firefighter Louis Faugno, and longtime Center Volunteer Firefighter Peter Carew. Between them, these men have exemplified what it has meant to serve their city as not just firefighters but proud residents of our city. We thank them for all they’ve done and continue to do for our city and we also thank the staff at Lorenzo’s for their wonderful hospitality in allowing us to host this time honored tradition.
