Celebrated annually on June 14, Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States 249 years ago on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. According to the National Flag Foundation, "The American flag is an actively evolving historical document, updated 27 times since 1777."

Today marks the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, when over 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy. As an Air Force veteran, I reflect on today with deep gratitude for the brave service members who sacrificed everything in defense of freedom.

Their sacrifice demonstrated the strength that comes from standing up for and alongside our allies in the face of tyranny and aggression. That lesson remains as important today as it was 82 years ago.

As we remember those who never came home, let us also uphold our responsibility to care for the veterans who have served our nation. May we never forget their courage or the freedoms they helped secure.
