Memorial Day:
I listen to the radio and watch the TV and as I do these things I begin to think that Memorial Day is about selling mattresses, cars, real estate and just about everything you can name. Some give lip service to Memorial Day in their ads by thanking Veterans. Memorial Day is not about thanking Veterans. Veterans are the men and women who got to come home when their Service time was done. Veterans came home to raise families and make a life in peace. Veterans are not the ones we need to thank and remember. As a man once said, "I am not a hero, the heroes are the ones who did not come home."
Memorial Day:
Is a day to remember the men and women who have donned the uniforms of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines to build and defend our Nation and gave the last full measure of devotion and laid down their lives. Some rest in well tended fields of honor here and on foreign shores, some lie beneath the sea waiting for the day when the sea shall give up her dead, and some lie where they fell enfolded by the earth in graves known but to God. Remember, give silent thanks and offer up a prayer to God for those who lie beneath the sod who died in Service to our Nation.
Great website and nice to see an engineering impression, which is a necessity to the army. I always been interested in an engineering impression, but there is nothing by me in Connecticut, which the exception of a small topographical group that is not real active. I like entrenchments.
Additional info regarding the event this Saturday at the Clarion:
The event actually starts at 6:45 pm with a re-enactment of the surrender by General Lee to General Grant at Appomattox. The grand promenade should be about 7:00 pm with dancing directly following.
During the day we have the Genesee County Historian speaking at 11:00 am on the Civil War in Genesee County. Dance lessons from 1-3 pm. We have another speaker at 1:00 pm also... the gentleman who is portraying General Lee will speak on "Four Days after Appomattox". The dance lessons last until 3:00 and I believe the speaker will take about an hour so you would be able to do both.
We also have sutlers and various historical displays pertaining to the Civil War period. An Author who has written a good book about the war will be there for book signing. We have an Indian Lady who is the 4th generation of Ely Parker who was a Captain with General Grant as an aide and actually wrote the treaty as dictated by General Grant.
There is also an Antique show going on the the Batavia Downs from 9:00 - 3:00 on Sat. The show also is on Friday evening from 5-9 pm.
So, we are trying to make a good full day of history for our guests. We hope you enjoy the rich history we have both nationally and locally.
