This was on WGRZ Channel 2 today. I've never been more pleased to be a reenactor, nor prouder of our unit that I was Sunday. Our efforts made a little guy who is going through a really rough patch smile. Thanks also to Mrs. Guido for making this happen for us.

Big thanks go out today to Cheryl Ball for hosting our winter meeting again this year. It was super to see everyone and I'd also like to thank everybody who was able to get there and give your thoughts.

Below is our schedule of events as of this date. We will, of course, supplement it with various parades and presentations throughout the year.

We have also determined that our next Engineer project will be the construction of a portable timber trestle bridge that we can transport to events like our tower. I'll begin the blueprints ASAP.

It looks to be an outstanding year ahead. I'm looking forward to another year of fun and camaraderie with you all.

I remain..

Your Obedient Servant,

Capt. Ball

Building a ponton bridge is not a simple exercise. Rather it is a highly choreographed undertaking by men trained for specific tasks. The 50th NY Engineer Regiment did so under fire on December 11…

It will be held in conjunction with the 143 NYVI's Living History event and the Town of Waterloo's Memorial Day Celebration.
The school is open to all interested reenactors, military from all branches or civilian. Engineersin attendance will earn their artificer's rank and other branches will earn their Pioneer designation and be presented with their axes. It is highly recommended that you have some experience as a reenactor as this is not a School of the Soldier.

I've included an album of photos from the 2018 School of the Engineer/Pioneer to show some of the action you can expect. https://www.facebook.com/pg/Annual-Civil-War-School-of-the-EngineerPioneer-507864462730656/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1073205549529875

f you have not yet registered for "On to Richmond" please do so soon. Co. A will have a small company under the Union Volunteers at this point. However we have room for more and it would be great to field a good sized group of Engineers. Our boys were there in '62, lets take the field in their honor! Early registration closes soon so save yourself some money!

This past Saturday the 1SG and I were very pleased to take part in a walk through of the grounds of the Chestnut Ridge Park where the reenactment will take place in the coming August. I have also been engaged in talks with Mike Lavis, the event coordinator, and the County representatives of the park to run the Engineer School there the weekend prior to the event. They were excited at the possibility of having us there and were excited at the prospect of building things there as well. They cited opportunities to build a tower, and/ or a bridge! While the School information needs to be finalized- it appears to be a go. Details to follow upon confirmation.

I have never seen better ground for a reenactment. There are so many possibilities that it was almost mind boggling. Woods to open fields, hills to rolling and flat land... While I am aware that it is a long way off, I would suggest that this reenactment, August 25, 26, 27 be a maximum effort event for us next year.

I will post more information about what was discussed over the next few days.

I'd like to give a shout out to Gerry Angelo today. Gerry, while just getting started, is already an outstanding addition to Co. A. and a very promising Engineer. Yesterday, two different units at Manassas tried to steal him from our ranks with the promise of a promotion. This may sound familiar..... Props to Gerry for his loyalty to this unit. As for the poachers.... well, I'll just leave it there.

As you all know by now, Camp Geiger has been cancelled.

We will be hosting an event at Old Bethpage Village Restoration (OBVR) the weekend of May 13-15.
The weekend will include:
•Drill
•School of the NCO & officer
•Plus plenty of fun activities.

This will be a the last rust shaker before Bull Run.

We need numbers for who is coming to this.

Please get back to us ASAP at [email protected]
Thank you members of the Company A, US Engineers. Your attendence added to the dignity of the ceremony.
Memorial Day:
I listen to the radio and watch the TV and as I do these things I begin to think that Memorial Day is about selling mattresses, cars, real estate and just about everything you can name. Some give lip service to Memorial Day in their ads by thanking Veterans. Memorial Day is not about thanking Veterans. Veterans are the men and women who got to come home when their Service time was done. Veterans came home to raise families and make a life in peace. Veterans are not the ones we need to thank and remember. As a man once said, "I am not a hero, the heroes are the ones who did not come home."

Memorial Day:
Is a day to remember the men and women who have donned the uniforms of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines to build and defend our Nation and gave the last full measure of devotion and laid down their lives. Some rest in well tended fields of honor here and on foreign shores, some lie beneath the sea waiting for the day when the sea shall give up her dead, and some lie where they fell enfolded by the earth in graves known but to God. Remember, give silent thanks and offer up a prayer to God for those who lie beneath the sod who died in Service to our Nation.
Great website and nice to see an engineering impression, which is a necessity to the army. I always been interested in an engineering impression, but there is nothing by me in Connecticut, which the exception of a small topographical group that is not real active. I like entrenchments.
Additional info regarding the event this Saturday at the Clarion:

The event actually starts at 6:45 pm with a re-enactment of the surrender by General Lee to General Grant at Appomattox. The grand promenade should be about 7:00 pm with dancing directly following.
During the day we have the Genesee County Historian speaking at 11:00 am on the Civil War in Genesee County. Dance lessons from 1-3 pm. We have another speaker at 1:00 pm also... the gentleman who is portraying General Lee will speak on "Four Days after Appomattox". The dance lessons last until 3:00 and I believe the speaker will take about an hour so you would be able to do both.
We also have sutlers and various historical displays pertaining to the Civil War period. An Author who has written a good book about the war will be there for book signing. We have an Indian Lady who is the 4th generation of Ely Parker who was a Captain with General Grant as an aide and actually wrote the treaty as dictated by General Grant.
There is also an Antique show going on the the Batavia Downs from 9:00 - 3:00 on Sat. The show also is on Friday evening from 5-9 pm.
So, we are trying to make a good full day of history for our guests. We hope you enjoy the rich history we have both nationally and locally.
ATTENTION TO ORDERS:

Uniform for the St. Patrick's Day Parade 3/14 will be sky blue trousers, frock coats (without scales), forage caps and greatcoats. Equipment will be light marching order, scarves and gloves will be permissible should weather dictate the need. When in doubt, wear layers under your gear, do not be the one to get soggy then chilled. You will be sorry.
