Paper Checks Are on the Way Out

The IRS is phasing out most paper refund checks after Sept. 30, 2025, as part of a broader transition to electronic transactions. The change applies to 2025 tax returns filed in 2026. Taxpayers who do not provide direct deposit information may experience refund delays and receive an IRS request to update banking details within 30 days. Fourth quarter estimated payments are due Jan. 15, 2026. Taxpayers can choose from several electronic payment options, including IRS Direct Pay, IRS Online Account payments, EFTPS and electronic funds withdrawal when filing electronically. Debit card, credit card and digital wallet payments are also available, though fees may apply. Although electronic payments are strongly encouraged, the IRS will still accept paper checks.

IRS penalties and interest can begin adding up after January 2 on unpaid tax balances. That means higher amounts owed and more aggressive IRS collection activity.

If you have back taxes, there may still be options such as penalty abatement or payment plans that can help reduce the impact — but timing matters.

Message us or schedule a free, confidential consultation to review your tax situation before costs increase.

EFTPS is being removed for individual taxpayers in 2026:

"Effective October 17th, 2025, Individuals will not be able to create new enrollments via EFTPS.gov. If you are an individual taxpayer and are not enrolled in EFTPS.gov by October 17th, you'll need to create an IRS Online Account for Individuals or use the IRS Direct Pay guest path. If you are already enrolled in EFTPS.gov to make your individual tax payments you will still be able to make payments; however, it is encouraged you transition to IRS Online Account for Individuals or IRS Direct Pay. All individuals will be required to transition from EFTPS.gov later in 2026."

Starting this year, the IRS is implementing new U.S. tax reporting regulations for all digital asset transactions and brokers.
A reminder that in the U.S., reporting income or capital gains from crypto transactions has always been a requirement.

Here’s what you need to know about the new IRS crypto tax changes:
• All crypto exchanges are required to report the sale and exchange of digital asset transactions through a new Form 1099-DA to the IRS. This is new and will standardize gross proceeds reporting from the sale and exchange of crypto.
• For the 2025 tax year, Form 1099-DA will only report gross proceeds from the sale and exchange of digital assets, so taxpayers must continue to rely on their own records for cost basis information. For the 2026 tax year, the 1099-DA will include both cost basis and gross proceeds reporting.
• All crypto exchanges are required to confirm the tax status of digital asset traders (subject to U.S. tax laws). Traders without a confirmed tax status will be subject to backup withholding tax (currently a flat 24% federal tax on all proceeds, with an additional percentage withheld depending on your state¹) and limited trading access beginning January 1, 2027.

Did You Know You Can Be Fined for a Mismatched TIN?

Submitting incorrect Name/TIN combinations on your W-2s or 1099s can trigger IRS penalties.

If the name and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) you submit don’t match IRS records, you’ll receive a CP2100 or CP2100A Notice. At that point, you’ll be required to:
• Correct the information
• Prove you attempted to obtain the correct details
• Begin withholding funds on all future payments if the issue isn’t resolved

The IRS recommends that you collect W-9s annually from all independent contractors. But don’t worry—we can handle that for you.

Here’s how it works:
• We email your contractors directly
• They complete the W-9 electronically
• Their information is saved securely in your account
• You stay compliant with IRS rules—without lifting a finger

You don’t even need to use our e-filing platform to take advantage of this service.

Whether you need TIN Matching, W-9 collection, or full-service e-filing, we’ve got you covered.
