We did it!! The OEPA received 100 public comments in regards to the Scioto Materials asphalt plant, and the plant's air permit 5 year renewal. Consequently, the agency WILL be holding a public hearing on this issue in the fall of 2026.

The agency will give us a 30 day notice of when this meeting will be held. When we have a date, we will send out a SAVE THE DATE, and then let's fill the room and let the OEPA know that things HAVE to change at this 600,000 ton a year asphalt production plant.

Please share this story and help us get word out about anyone and everyone submitting an OEPA public comment regarding the large 600,000 ton a year Scioto Materials asphalt plant that operates at 270 and Rt 3 at the border of Columbus and Westerville, Ohio.

The polluting plant has submitted its 5 year air permit renewal to the OEPA. The OEPA wants to hear from YOU.

2. Ask the OEPA to grant our community a public hearing that takes place in Westerville or Blendon Twp, a neighborhood being impacted by the Scioto Materials asphalt pollution

3. Ask the OEPA for a public comment extension for introducing this during a holiday (July 4, 2026), when Westerville city council and Otterbein students are on break, and because the OEPA comment portal was not functioning properly for some submitting comments.

We just got word that tonight at 6 p.m., NBC4 Columbus is running a segment about the Scioto Materials asphalt plant on Westerville Road. Please watch if you can, and we will post the video when it is available online. They interviewed Citizen Pollution Watch founder and activist, Jenny Morgan, today. Please share this message with anyone you know in Westerville, Blendon Township, and NE Columbus. Worthy read from the North Carolina Dept. of Environmental Quality about asphalt plant emissions. It isn't just steam coming from the asphalt plant in Westerville. Please make your voice heard and submit a public comment to the Ohio EPA by August 1st. More info in the comments.

Please make your voice heard and fight for cleaner air! We have neighborhoods, churches, Huber Ridge elementary school, parks, assisted living facilities, Alum Creek, and more near the Shelly Materials asphalt plant at 6189 Westerville Road, Westerville, Ohio. Please submit a public comment and request a public hearing to the Ohio EPA by August 1st. We have been burdened for far too long by the hazardous emissions from this site, and we deserve better!
