Firefighters Favata and Lucia spent time with 3rd graders at Westfield River Elementary School last week, presenting Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) on how and when to call 9-11.

Students learned critical safety skills, including:

Spotting an Emergency: how to tell the difference between a real emergency and a situation that just needs normal help.

Making the Call: The steps to dial 9-1-1 and staying calm on the phone.

What to Say: the critical information dispatchers will ask for: like your location and what exactly is happening.

Then the students got to feel what it is like to operate a real fire hose!!

Teaching these skills early builds confidence and keeps our community safer.

An investigation by the DFS Code Compliance & Enforcement Unit and Holyoke Fire Department led to a two-and-a-half-year license suspension for a Hampden hood cleaning company. Have fun on the water, stay safe, and remember: fish belong in the water... firefighters, EMTs, and rescue boats prefer not to join them.

Your boat may be unsinkable... right up until it decides to prove you wrong.

May was BUSY for the Westfield Fire Department!



When the alarms sounded in May, Westfield firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics were ready to answer the call. Making 1,207 apparatus responses to 776 incidents, and providing care for 607 patients, resulting in 471 patient transports.

In addition to emergency responses within our community, crews also provided 56 mutual aid responses to assist neighboring communities. May also included 213 multiple-incident events, demonstrating the challenges of managing several emergencies occurring at the same time.

Behind every number is a story — a medical emergency, a fire, a crash, a family needing help, or a neighbor in crisis. These statistics represent thousands of hours of training, teamwork, and dedication by the men and women of the Westfield Fire Department who are ready to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

PUBLIC ASSISTANCE REQUESTED: Search Underway After Unoccupied Kayak Found in Long Pond

WESTFIELD, MA – The Westfield Fire Department, in coordination with the Massachusetts Environmental Police and Dive Team personnel, is currently conducting a search and rescue operation on Long Pond for a potential missing person.

The investigation began after authorities received a report of an unoccupied, green and blue kayak floating at anchor. The kayak, which contained a fishing pole, has reportedly been in the water since last night.

The Westfield Fire Department, Dive Team, and Environmental Police are currently on the scene conducting search operations. At this time, no missing person reports have been filed that match the watercraft, and authorities are working to determine if an emergency has occurred.

How the Public Can Help

The Westfield Fire Department is asking for the public's immediate assistance in identifying the owner of the watercraft.

If you own this kayak, or if you left it anchored in Long Pond, please contact authorities so crews can stand down.

If you recognize the description of the green and blue kayak, or if you know anyone who went fishing on Long Pond yesterday and has not returned, please notify public safety immediately.

🚨 Incident Alert 🚨

Westfield Fire Department personnel, along with mutual aid responders, are currently conducting a search operation in Long Pond in the Hampton Ponds area.

Residents are asked to avoid the area and stay clear of emergency personnel and equipment to allow crews to safely and effectively conduct operations.

We appreciate the public's cooperation and will provide additional information as it becomes available.

🚨 INCIDENT UPDATE: Vehicle Fire on the Mass Pike 🚨

Earlier today, the Westfield Fire Department responded to a reported car fire on the Mass Pike (I-90) Eastbound near mile marker 33.

Upon arrival, the vehicle was already fully involved, and the flames had started spreading to the nearby wood line, sparking a brush fire. Due to the location and the need for additional water, Blandford Fire Department assisted on scene with a tanker and an attack pumper.

The Good News: The vehicle occupants—and their dogs—managed to get out safely before our arrival.

The Warning: The driver did sustain minor injuries while attempting to save personal belongings from the burning vehicle. We want to remind everyone that material items can be replaced, but you cannot. If your vehicle catches fire, get out, stay out, and wait for emergency crews to arrive.

While we know these scenes can draw a lot of attention, our priority is keeping everyone safe, including our firefighters working just feet away from moving traffic.

When you see flashing lights, please SLOW DOWN and MOVE OVER. Give emergency responders the room they need to do their jobs and make it home to their families.
