Services for Independent Living, Inc. (SIL)

Services for Independent Living, Inc. (SIL) SIL was founded in 1980 as Ohio’s first established Center for Independent Living

SIL provides an array of individual and community services designed to help and empower individuals of all ages and all disabilities lead healthy, productive lives and participate in community life as they choose. Individual services focus on providing individuals with disabilities access to information and skills needed to facilitate and enhance their independence and to remain in the community o

f choice. Community services are designed to address barriers to community living and promote the concept of independent living and choice. The majority of SIL Staff and a majority of SIL Board of Directors are individuals with disabilities. All SIL services are guided by the independent living philosophy and SIL’s mission which in turn supports the agency’s vision of a society that is accessible to all people.

Get Involved in Advocacy!

More people are getting involved in political advocacy for the first time—attending town halls, calling their members of Congress, and using social media to organize and speak up.

💙 People with disabilities need to be part of these conversations, too!

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) has updated its resource, “They Work For Us: A Self-Advocate’s Guide to Getting Through to Your Elected Officials.”

This guide can help self-advocates learn how to connect with elected officials, share their experiences, and make their voices heard on issues that matter.

🗣️ Advocacy starts with your voice. Get involved and help create change!

World Duchenne Awareness Day – September 7, 2026

This year’s theme is “Access Changes Lives.”

For people living with Duchenne and their families, access means more than healthcare. It means access to accurate information, timely diagnosis, specialized care, treatments, assistive technology, education, employment, recreation, transportation, and meaningful participation in the community.

🌎 Everyone living with Duchenne deserves the opportunity to access the support, care, and opportunities they need to live a full and meaningful life.
Today, we raise awareness, celebrate progress, and call for greater access and inclusion for the Duchenne community.

Access changes lives. 💙
