Did you know: Juneteenth marks a powerful moment in American history—June 19, 1865—when Union troops, led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas, and finally announced that all enslaved people were free. This life-changing news came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Although freedom had been declared, it had not yet reached many in Texas due to limited Union enforcement and ongoing resistance. Juneteenth stands as a celebration of delayed justice, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of freedom.
