Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation

Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation Mt. Wood Cemetery is Wheeling, West Virginia's, oldest extant cemetery. The goal of this movement is to return the cemetery to its former glory.

The Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation is a 501 c 3 non-profit organization that was established in June 2023 to raise funds for the restoration and preservation of cemeteries that lack an active association and board of directors. Incorporated in 1848, it is resting place for many of the area's prominent and hardworking citizens. This past year saw a grassroots movement of several local organizati

ons and volunteers from the community come together to partner on various projects. Long the victim of vandalism and the effects of gravity, the gravestones and monuments in this graveyard are fallen over, leaning, or in desperate need of a simple cleaning. Friends of Wheeling, Wheeling National Heritage Area, the Public Policy Foundation of West Virginia, and the Irene Meagel Fund at the Community Foundation for Ohio Valley, contracted a conservator to come to Mt. Wood and conduct a 3-day workshop on how to reset and repair many of the burial markers. Friends of Wheeling held a cemetery tour, bringing to life many of those that are found buried there. And, volunteers from the community, the Ohio Valley Young Preservationists and Belmont College students from the Building Preservation and Restoration program have spent countless hours working there this past Fall, to repair many of the gravestones. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the Fall of 2013.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Stone Church Cemetery Spring Cleanup
Saturday, May 9, 1:00 to 3:00

It's Historic Preservation month! Please join us at our second cleanup day of this season next Saturday, May 9 from 1:00 to 3:00 at Stone Church Cemetery, 136 Stone Church Road, Elm Grove.

We’ll be removing trash, spent flags, fallen branches and generally tidying up the grounds. This work makes it easier for the City’s lawn crew to mow, and of course improves the cemetery’s appearance.

Volunteers may come and go as their schedules permit. Training is not required and no experience is necessary.
We recommend wearing sunscreen and a hat, protective shoes, and garden gloves. Bring a rake and any of your favorite garden tools. Water will be provided.

We look forward to your participation!

Our fundraising challenge match campaign has exceeded our $3,800 goal!

Heartfelt thanks to our 15 generous friends who matched our $1,500 challenge gift and beyond. And special thanks to our anonymous challenge donor, and to the Friends of Wheeling for donating contributions made by attendees of the Mt. Wood Cemetery tour on September 7.

Contributions total $3,965.65, providing $1,900 for a day’s work by RanTiff Services coming up on Friday, October 24 at Peninsula Cemetery. And we are able to cover the fee for one of three days of repairs at Mt. Wood Cemetery by RanTiff in August.

We’ve had a very productive summer with major restorations at Stone Church, Mt. Wood and Peninsula Cemeteries by our dedicated volunteers and the skilled work of the RanTiff team.

Please keep those contributions coming. We rely on financial support to purchase supplies and equipment, and to engage professional services for restorations beyond the capacity of our volunteers.

Donations to the Foundation are tax deductible and can be sent to the Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation, 1400 Main Street, Box 1, Wheeling, WV 26003.

Challenge Grant Update
As has been posted on our page, the foundation received a $1,500 challenge matching grant from an anonymous donor earlier this month.

To date we have received ten contributions totalling $2,117, exceeding the match for a total of $3,617. THANK YOU to our generous donors!

We need only $183 more to reach our $3,800 goal!

Why $3,800? That's how much two days of monument restoration work costs. Our friends at RanTiff Services, LLC give us a discounted daily rate of $1,900. In one day at Mt. Wood Cemetery last month five large obelisks were reset. We've scheduled a day's work at Peninsula Cemetery next week.

Contributions are welcome in any amount and are tax deductible. Send to:
Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation

And thank you for your interest and support!

Our Tripod Training Workshop today reminded us of how rewarding it is to restore monuments while enjoying the company of fellow volunteers. We welcomed two new volunteers - Audrey Hunt and Terra Weaver - who jumped right in and were very helpful.

The unique and very beautiful monument of Timothy W. Bliss was reset and its footer was also aligned properly. The monument is covered with Masonic emblems and Latin mottos, highlighted by a carving of Bliss's ceremonial Masonic saber. Here are before and after photos...

We also reset two smaller nearby monuments for two little boys, Louis and Harry Decant who died aged 12 and 7 respectively.

A second large monument of Ella Prall was reset as well. Volunteers pictured l to r: John Hargleroad, Adam Windsor, Bill Cox, Lane Sanders, Terra Weaver, Mike Pajak and Audrey Hunt. What a team!
