Listening to the reading of the Declaration of Independence on the steps of White Plains City Hall, as we approach 250 years after the State of New York was born when this first happened in White Plains.

I am sorry to learn of the passing of my predecessor in the New York State Assembly, Robert Castelli. Bob served the public in numerous capacities, including the Army, on the Lewisboro Town Board, and in Albany. After our hard-fought race, he would visit the office on occasion, and he would always be a gentleman. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and the communities he served.

I haven’t posted much related to the world of politics/government in recent years, and for good reason. I do though want to shout out this photo, posted by NYS Assemblymember Chris Burdick. The photo is from a community meeting in North White Plains, and just like me many times in the past, Chris is there, as are a few Town of North Castle officials. But also, if you look in the background of the photo, there is George Latimer, Westchester County Executive.

On a Saturday morning at 10am, George doesn’t have to be at a neighborhood meeting with about a dozen area residents. North White Plains, like the whole Town of North Castle it’s a part of, isn’t in the NY 16th Congressional District, where George is running this year. He isn’t at this meeting for political reasons. He isn’t there to toot his own horn. He’s there because he takes his job as an elected official seriously.

George Latimer represents everyone in that room, and cares what they have to say. He wants government to be there to solve problems. And that’s why we should want people like George Latimer to be our Representative.

It was good to meet with residents of North White Plains at their monthly meeting over the weekend at the North White Plains Community Center. I updated the gathering on the status of negotiations on the 2024-2025 NYS budget, work to increase funding for maintenance, repair and paving of state roads in the Hudson Valley (including Route 128), and other topics.

My thanks to North Castle Town Board member Barbara DiGiacinto for inviting me and to Deputy Supervisor Jose Berra for being on hand.

So proud of Lara Samet Buchwald, who ran her first half marathon this morning at the Fall Foliage Half Marathon in Rhinebeck. Way to go, my love. Our girls and I are inspired by you every day, and especially today.

It was 12 years ago this month that I began working with the Kingsley House Tenants Association at 41 Barker Avenue to help low-income seniors stay in their homes. Together we slashed proposed double-digit rent increases. This rehabilitation project is a lifeline to so many.

An August 18 ribbon-cutting marked the completion of the two-year, $36 million rehabilitation of Kingsley House, an affordable housing development for seniors at 41 Barker Ave. in White Plains. Kingsley House was built in 1968 as part of the New York State Mitchell-Lama Program, which was establishe...

On this day 100 years ago, Albert Einstein was named the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics. As much as he contributed to our understanding of the universe, the Nobel he received was for describing the photoelectric effect - how objects, particularly metals, hit by light can release electrons. Many years later, in high school and then as a physics major in college, I learned about Einstein’s discovery (and many others he made). Today, the photoelectric effect is at the heart of a solar power industry that is an essential part of providing for our sustainable future.
