📬 A few thoughts and updates from around Sedgwick County
I wanted to share my latest newsletter with you. There’s a lot happening in our community, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve and be part of these important conversations.
From the difficult decisions surrounding solar projects and the 2027 county budget, to public safety, economic development, local government and some great people making a difference in our community — there’s a little bit of everything in this edition.
One of the hardest parts of public service is making decisions when there are good people and legitimate concerns on both sides. I don’t take those decisions lightly, and I’m thankful to everyone who takes the time to stay informed, speak up and be involved. 🇺🇸

🏛️ Busy week for Sedgwick County! 🏛️
Our 2027 Budget and Capital Improvement Program have officially been adopted—balancing important community investments with taxpayer relief!
Here are the key highlights:
💰 Taxpayer Relief: We adopted a $624.2M budget while lowering the County mill levy for the 4th year in a row, leaving $7.5M in additional department requests unfunded to keep spending responsible.
🚑 Public Safety First: Adding 10 EMTs, 5 paramedics, 3 ambulances, and 3 operational support vehicles to strengthen local EMS response.
🚧 Roads & Infrastructure: Allocating $24.1M for roads/bridges over the next 5 years, plus redirecting $740K to address immediate paving and bridge repair projects.
📡 911 & Emergency Response: Upgrading our aging 911 radio system ($14.5M) and building a new Emergency Preparedness Center ($20.65M).
🚁 Aviation & Law Enforcement: Advancing conversations on a joint hangar with the Kansas Highway Patrol at Jabara Airport.
🏟️ Community Assets: Reinvesting $2M into the INTRUST Bank Arena reserve fund using non-property-tax revenue sources.
We have invested additional money into the Sedgwick County Appraisers office to ensure accurate valuations. I will continue to make this a priority!

After 8 weeks of intensive training, they are moving to on-site preparation to answer your 911 calls. They are our community's initial first responders—providing steady guidance and hope when seconds count. 🛡️❤️

🚨 Big news for public safety in southwest Wichita! 🚨
I started working on getting this new fire station back in 2013 to serve the growing Maize and Pawnee area and address the challenge of meeting response times when crossing Kellogg. Today, the evidence was clear when all of the trucks at the groundbreaking were deployed for an actual call in the neighborhood!
🚒 We’re breaking ground on Fire Station 23!
Today, City leaders, Wichita Fire Department personnel, and community partners gathered at Pawnee and Maize to celebrate the groundbreaking of Wichita’s newest fire station. 🔥
A special thank you to Mayor Wu, Vice Mayor Glasscock, and my colleague former council member Frye for seeing this project through and making it a priority. 🙌
Fire Station 23 represents an important investment in public safety and will help improve emergency response in southwest Wichita as our community continues to grow. 📈
We’re excited to see this long-awaited project officially underway! 🚒🏗️👏

Inspiring visit today from Laciauna King! 🌟
Laciauna stopped by the County Commission office to interview me about homelessness initiatives as part of her Eagle Scout project. As a junior at Northwest High School, her initiative, dedication, and leadership on such a critical issue in our community are truly commendable.
Please join me in applauding Laciauna for taking action, asking the big questions, and serving as a role model for young leaders everywhere! 👏 We are lucky to have bright minds like hers stepping up.

We especially want to highlight your amazing dedication to local youth—between the FFA Grant Program and awarded high school scholarships totaling over $18,000, you are truly changing lives! 🌟🎓

✈️🌍 Reflecting on an incredible, fast-paced trip representing Wichita and Sedgwick County at the Farnborough International Airshow!
A massive thank you to the Greater Wichita Partnership for hosting the Air Capital of the World Reception—the premier gathering of the airshow!
🌟 Key Highlights & Achievements:
🤝 Back-to-Back Growth Meetings: It felt like speed-dating for economic development! We met continuously with industry leaders to explore new acquisition opportunities and recruit expanding businesses to Wichita and Sedgwick County.
📜 Historic Sister City Agreement: I had the distinct honor of signing as an honorary signature for our first new Sister City partnership since the 1980s!
🚀 Global Positioning: Strengthened key relationships with aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing leaders from across the globe to ensure Wichita retains its title as the Air Capital of the World.
💡 Exciting Announcements: The show brought major wins for our region (I’ll share a few of the biggest ones in the comments below! 👇).
