If you own property, you may have recently received a notice of proposed property tax increase and public hearings from Butler County. And, if you looked at the City of Towanda, you may have seen a HUGE proposed increase for 2027 😱😭

We have good news though! Last week, Towanda voters overwhelmingly passed a 1.5% sales tax for the next 10 years that provides a dedicated source of funding for streets and law enforcement. With funds secured for these critical (and costly) services, we're rebuilding the proposed budget at a level much closer to the current year's 43.577 mills (rather than the 63.577 on your statements, which might have been needed if the sales tax hadn’t passed).

For those who want to see the outcomes or comment on the final proposed budget, the City of Towanda budget hearing will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 9 at City Hall as part of the September Council meeting.

If you see fire hydrants running or water flowing down the streets, it's our Public Works crew performing routine system flushing. This helps keep the water system fresh and healthy, and is part of our standard maintenance.

We know most people don't eagerly watch for bills to arrive, but if you are wondering where water bills are, they'll be arriving soon!

We've had some staffing changes at City Hall and new people learning new processes. We're also trying to make sure we get things right to minimize any concerns or frustrations.

In the meantime, if you like checking water bill payment off your to-do list early in the month, give us a call or swing by and we'll be happy to help!

If you live along the east part of Clay Hill Road or S. 6th Street, you likely received a yellow door hanger with updates on next steps as the road rehabilitation wraps up.

Next week (July 20-24) a slurry seal mixture will be spread over recently repaired sections, and this will seal the roadways and extend their lives.

How to prepare:
- All cars need to be moved off the street by 7 a.m. each day. Cars not moved will be towed to a nearby street.
- Turn off automatic watering devices each evening before work.
- Avoid throwing grass clippings on the street until the work is complete.

The streets will be closed during the day, but there will be access provided in the event of emergencies.
- You may stay in your driveway if you do not plan to leave your house during the day
- The seal coat contains oil that can damage your car's finish and other surfaces
- Do not walk or drive through closed areas.
