❓ What social skill do you think every student should begin learning early—and continue building throughout their K–12 journey?

Social skills are an important part of student success. Learning how to communicate, listen, show empathy, work with others, solve problems, manage emotions, demonstrate patience, and take responsibility can help students build stronger relationships, navigate challenges, and feel more confident at school, at home, and in their communities.

These skills develop over time, and starting young gives children more opportunities to practice them in everyday situations. Just as importantly, every student develops social and emotional skills differently. Some students may need additional time, support, modeling, accommodations, or different ways to engage—and that is an important part of creating welcoming and supportive learning environments for all students.

For our military-connected students, strong social skills can be especially valuable as they experience moves, new schools, changing friendships, deployments, and other transitions. Support from families, educators, and community partners can make those transitions a little easier.

Teachers and families can reinforce social skills through simple activities such as cooperative projects, classroom discussions, peer mentoring, role-playing, team challenges, problem-solving scenarios, and opportunities for students to practice leadership and kindness.

Educators and military families: What social skill do you believe students need the most today?

Student Focused. Partnership Driven!

We were out at Andale Elementary School — Home of the Falcons this morning helping welcome students back for a new school year!

There was plenty of first-day excitement as students arrived to find Airmen from McConnell AFB ready with smiles, high-fives, fist bumps and words of encouragement. Some students’ eyes got pretty wide when they saw the Airmen—and one young Falcon even stopped to give them a salute! 🫡

A special thank you to the Andale Elementary staff, parents, school leadership and Renwick USD 267 Assistant Superintendent for the warm welcome and for allowing our Airmen to be part of the morning.

Have an amazing school year, Falcons! Soar high! 🦅

Skip the question, “How was school?”

Instead, spark meaningful conversations with your child using questions that encourage them to share more than just “fine.” A few thoughtful questions can strengthen your connection, build trust, and provide a glimpse into their school day.

Small conversations today can make a big difference tomorrow. Which question will you ask first?

Student Focused. Partnership Driven!

Our last stop this week was cheering on the Park Hill Huskies as they kicked off another school year! There’s something truly special about seeing students welcomed with smiles and knowing their school, community, and military partners are all behind them.

It was great to see Principal Bennett alongside Airmen from McConnell AFB, who volunteered their time to greet students with high-fives, fist bumps, and plenty of encouragement.

This is educational leadership and partnership in action—strengthening the connection between our installation and local schools to build a community where every student and family feels supported and valued.

To Principal Bennett, the entire staff, and all the Huskies—have an incredible school year!

We’re proud to stand with our schools—because when we show up for students, we help them start strong and succeed together.

💜 Student Focused. Partnership Driven.

On 12 August 2026, Airmen from McConnell Air Force Base and Soldiers from the U.S. Army Reserve volunteered their time to welcome students at Wineteer Elementary on their first day of school!

There were smiles, a few frowns and tears, and plenty of high-fives and fist bumps as students began a new school year.

As a Purple Star School District, Derby Public Schools demonstrates a strong commitment to military-connected students and families. Those who wear the uniform can know their children have a school community that understands military life—from transitioning in or out of the area to frequent TDYs, extended schools and deployments.

When our schools support military children, they support the families behind the mission. 💜

Student Focused. Partnership Driven!

Military and community partnership was on full display today at Derby North Middle School! Airmen from McConnell Air Force Base and U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers from the 451st Expeditionary Sustainment Command (ESC) joined school staff and student leaders in welcoming students with high-fives, fist bumps, encouragement, and plenty of positive energy.

And we’re not finished yet! Tomorrow, Airmen, Soldiers, and the McConnell AFB School Liaison Program Manager will be at Wineteer Elementary School to welcome students on their first day.

It’s a simple message to our students: your military community supports you and your success.
