Williams Writing Workshop

Williams Writing Workshop We are peer tutors, trained and happy to help students with writing in any discipline or stage of the writing process.
(2)

The Writing Workshop is now located in a single location at the foyer of the new Stetson-Sawyer library. Opening hours are 10am to midnight Sunday through Thursday, and 10am to 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Drop-in or schedule an appointment online. We hope to see you soon!

Mission: The Writing Workshop is a student-staffed program designed to provide assistance at any stage of the writing process, from initial brainstorming to final drafts. We are sophomores, juniors, and seniors, selected and trained to work with you in an informal, non-judgmental setting. We can help you solidify an idea, develop a thesis, organize a paper, or tighten and unify an argument. We can also help with sentence structure, style, and grammar. You can bring us any type of writing from any field — essays, lab reports, seminar papers — and anything in between.

The Writing Workshop will begin remote tutoring on Wednesday, April 8 at noon. Please use TutorTrac, as you would normally do, to make an appointment ahead of time. To drop in, go into TutorTrac to see if anyone is working at that time. Click on the link under the tutor’s name, and if Google Meet says there is only one person in the “Hangout,” then the tutor is available for you. If it says there are two people in the Hangout, then someone has already dropped-in ahead of you and you can’t join the room. This is the virtual equivalent of stopping by the workshop in Sawyer and seeing the door closed and two people working together inside. Just as in the library, you are welcome to wait until the student leaves the Hangout and the tutor is available again. As long as there is enough time remaining in their shift, they will be able to work with you.

Meet the last Tutor of the Week for this semester, Francesca D'Arista!

“The communal aspect. I love working with a student and seeing their face light up -- whether it be in helping them clarify an idea or expanding upon something they only briefly talked about in their paper. Just to affirm for them, 'Hey, this paper is good.' Students are always coming in and saying, 'Okay, this paper is trash. Can you help me?' And I find myself saying, 'Dude, this paper is NOT trash,' right off the bat. And so being able to help students build their confidence in their writing, and to find the joy in it, and to not necessarily take it as something they’re doing for a grade -- just being able to have them find their own path and their own experience and taking pride it it -- that’s something I always enjoy facilitating.”

Meet this week's Writing Tutor of the Week, Rebecca Tauber!

"I worked with two students recently and both of them definitely needed help with their papers and needed to do a lot of work, but they were both so game to do that work. I love whenever someone comes in and I don’t have to tell them, ‘Take out a pen and write notes,’ because they’re already furiously scribbling notes from our conversation onto their paper. And I love it when they start to notice the things we talked about in their paper without me having to say anything."

Meet this week's Writing Tutor of the Week, Bret Hairston!

"My favorite part about writing is when I can actually feel myself be attached to the paper that I’m writing. Like when I feel that there’s a little part of me in the words. So like, usually when I’m writing some black sh*t, suddenly the wind is blowing through my hair and I’m writing a novel and I have the words of James Baldwin -- and yeah, I’m having a great time. The worst part for me is when I’m detached from the writing, so that I’m just spewing words down for the professor. I hate that kind of writing. I find myself doing it more often than I’d like to here, because this school just makes you put out product, and not necessarily the product that you want to do. So for me I really cherish the moments when I’m putting out product that I want to put out.”

Meet this week's Tutor of the Week, Kate Howley!

“My least favorite part about writing is just getting the motivation, and I guess that’s the hardest part as well. Because you have to be creating something and it takes a lot to look at something that’s not there and then think, ‘Oh, I have to go and make this.’ So to me, when people bring their essays into the writing workshop, I always feel like they’re already over the hard part. When people come in stressed about something, I tell them, ‘Well, you’ve done it already, it’s just about making it a little better now.’ So to me the hard part is just getting the motivation to do it, and everything after that should be fun.”

Meet this week's Writing Tutor of the Week, JoJo Fernandez!

“When I came in as a freshman I thought of myself as a terrible writer. And the way I was selected to be a writing workshop tutor was that my geosciences professor took me aside after I turned in a paper, and she told me she thought I was a great writer and that she was going to nominate me for a job at the writing workshop. And the whole time she was telling me this, I was just thinking to myself that she had the wrong paper, that the paper she was holding wasn’t mine. And so I think that the writing workshop in general has helped me transition from someone who originally didn’t think of herself as a good writer to someone who can facilitate writing for other people -- especially people who share similar struggles with writing as me. Usually the students who have told me I really helped them are also english second language speakers -- students who just need help processing their ideas in a different way.”

Meet this week's Writing Tutor of the Week, Angela Chan!

“I’m always so happy when people tell me that I’ve been a big help at the end of a session. I don’t have a particular thing that I like to help people with -- they can come at any point in the process. Some of my most fulfilling sessions have been when we just spent an hour talking about the content that they were working on. So it is really about how much they get out of it. And if they’ve gotten a lot out of our session, that makes me really happy.”

Meet this week's Writing Tutor of the Week, Mano Sundaresan!

“I’m a philosophy major, and that comes through in my writing and in the way I tutor as well. And one through line in all my writing is that I’m super interested in clarity. As any writer should be, in my opinion. If it’s not clear, then why are you even spending time on it? I think writers here at Williams especially struggle with that. Like, you’re a first year, you get your first assignment, and you overthink it and you go to the thesaurus and you take all these crazy words and you try your hardest to make the most academic sounding paper. And in the process you lose all clarity. So my advice to all writers is: Write things you would say. Obviously we don’t all talk formally. But write things that you could read aloud and feel comfortable saying.”
