National Grid is asking around 6,000 customers in parts of Snyder, Amherst, Eggertsville and in an area near Buffalo VA Medical Center to reduce unnecessary electricity use through 10 p.m. today. The request is being made as a precaution as crews continue to repair damage at two area substations.

Earlier today National Grid began contacting customers in the impacted areas asking them to curtail energy use. Due to high temperatures and the work that continues at the substations, the company is recommending some simple customer actions to help reduce demand on utility equipment and maintain system reliability.

More information and energy saving tips are in the attached news release.

It is with heartfelt sadness that I process the loss of a great friend, mentor and the cornerstone of local emergency management with the passing of Earl Loder, CD-132 Everyone knew Earl and learned from him during so many events and training sessions. I started working with Earl when I was appointed Disaster Coordinator for the Town of Amherst in 1990. Earl introduced himself to me as the loud fire chief who used to chase me and my brothers off the ramp at the Pine Hill Fire Company. I was born a couple doors away and my brothers and I would play on the big ramp surface. Every chance he got he would introduce me as the kid in diapers he used to chase out of the street. Earl and I were 30 years apart; our birthdays were 1 day apart. It didn’t matter if it was 2pm or 2 am, a snowstorm, flood, hazardous material incident or an alert at the airport; Earl was there doing the job he did so well. On our trips to Western District meetings in Batavia we would ride together and catch up, we would discuss life and he would remind me that I needed to watch what I was doing and not let this job consume me. I would look at him and say, “Really, consume me, I get paid to be a full time emergency manager”. We joked but he was always there with positive guidance and advice. Earl loved life and enjoyed it the best way he knew how. He and his wife June would, on occasion, go to the casino’s and generally have good luck but he always said he loved it because they spent time together. He loved coming back and showing us his winning tickets and slips they give the winners. He said it was fun and the next time he would donate it back but it was his reward for a career of hard work and dedication. I know you are still looking out for us and will be our guiding hand when the next event hits our community. "I learned a lot from you Earl and I will never forget you". Rest in peace my friend
