Courtney Love arrived a few weeks ago after being found outside near her mom, who had been deceased for some time. It’s a wonder that she survived those days without mom. Her strong will certainly played a part in that. I’ve never met a baby opossum more fierce and badass. 🤘☠️

The first turtle I took in as an apprentice, who I call “Sherlock”, has moved on to phase 3 of rehab. Now he gets to be in a hospital tank with water deep enough to swim in.

She'll probably be gone in two years.

That's the part most people don't know.

The opossum shuffling across your yard tonight has one of the shortest lifespans of any mammal her size. Most survive only one to two years in the wild.

Just one or two years.

In that time she has to avoid cars, dogs, predators, poison, traffic, storms, and every other danger that comes with living alongside people.

And yet she spends those nights helping the places she passes through.

🌿 She eats pests.

🌿 She cleans up carrion.

🌿 She removes insects and other unwanted visitors from gardens and woodlots.

🌿 She asks for nothing in return.

When she's frightened, she doesn't attack.

She bluffs.

She hisses.

She drools.

Sometimes she collapses into an involuntary "playing dead" response because survival is all she has ever known.

Most people see an opossum and notice the teeth.

I see an animal trying to make the most of a life that will be over far sooner than it should be.

🐾 If you see one tonight, give her space.

Slow down on the road.

Let her cross.

Her life is already short enough.

And when she's gone, the night shift loses one of its quiet workers.

She won't be here long.

Be kind anyway.
