Why Some Songbirds Kick Their Chicks Out Before They Can Fly

Just like humans, birds can also have parent-offspring conflicts. A recent study shared by the National Audubon Society finds that nest type plays a big role in how long young birds can stick around the nest.

Get ready for a once in a lifetime view of Saturn and Jupiter on December 21! Not only is it the Winter Solstice (the shortest daylight of the year) but it's also the day of "The Great Conjunction."

In astronomy, a conjunction is when two celestial objects appear to be very close to each other. What makes this conjunction so special is that Jupiter and Saturn will appear as one planet with the naked eye, which has not happened since 1623.

Grab your binoculars or telescope and check out these two giant planets as they appear as one!

The Eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly is one of the most common and beautiful eastern butterflies.

Swallowtails are very large insects. When basking in the sun, their outspread wings can be 3 to 5.5 inches from tip to tip. Their colors are vibrant. Broad yellow wings are edged by black and with four stripes, like tapering chevrons from the forewing margins downward into the yellow wings. The bottom edges of the hind wings are especially colorful with bluish scales and one or more red spots.

It's Turtle Time!

It's turtle time! Please keep a watchful eye out for turtles crossing the road this time of year. Females are on the move to lay their eggs close by where they laid them last year. Sometimes they must cross a road to do this. Enjoy our turtle video as Sarah provides you with information about different types of turtles and what to do if you find one alongside or on the road.

The Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center is closed to the public and we are unable to accept new animals until further notice. If you find an injured turtle or other wildlife, please visit goto.lakemetroparks.com/wildlifecenter for helpful information and for a list of other wildlife rehabilitation facilities that may be able to help.

Identifying Gulls

Did you know the seagull doesn’t exist? It’s not a figment of your imagination, rather there is simply no such bird known as a “seagull.” The term is actually a catch-all for any seabird, and can be used to describe a gull, a tern, or even an albatross!

What are those “seagulls” we see on the shores of Lake Erie?

How do you identify a tree?

Did you know there are more than 60,000 species of trees around the world?

Trees are crucial to this planet. They provide oxygen to breathe and food to eat; while also helping prevent erosion and provide homes for wildlife. The list is endless. With a striking red body and brilliant black wings, the scarlet tanager is one of the most beautiful summertime birds in Lake County. They have traveled to Ohio after spending winter in South America.

Found high in the trees of a forest, the scarlet tanager enjoys eating insects but can be found eating berries as well. The female is an olive-green color with dark wings and is the architect for building the nest. She will lay three to five eggs that once hatched, the babies will be fully grown after 15 days.

Look closely for the strikingly colored scarlet tanager as they will be here through the summer.

Birds a beacon of hope, help them thrive - Farm and Dairy

“Birding will bring miracles to your door,” said Jeffrey Gordon, president of the American Birding Association. “It’s like having Netflix with a constant supply of new episodes."

But as much as birds can help us through these stressful times, we can help them much more. By simply providing birds with food, water and a safe environment around our homes, we can help reverse a trend that is more than alarming.

Feeding, housing and watching birds at home can be a source of joy and therapy in these difficult times.
