Property tax reform shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all.

Tackett for Recorder of Deeds!

I’ve been pushing for a smarter approach to property tax categories — at minimum, three distinct tiers: residential, small business, and larger commercial properties.

Right now, too many of our local small businesses get lumped in with big corporate players and taxed at the same rate. That’s not fair. A neighborhood shop doesn’t have the revenue or resources of a national chain — yet they’re both paying the same freight.

If we want Main Street to survive, our tax structure needs to reflect that reality.

“New Castle County Councilman Dave Tackett said he would like to see “at least three categories” in the future: residential, small business and larger commercial properties.

It is particularly crucial small businesses are a part of the conversation moving forward, said Tackett, as many are taxed at the same rate as their corporate counterparts.

This, he said, is particularly unfair, given many local businesses don’t generate the same amount of revenue or have the same resources available to pay those high rates.”

Lawmakers passed several bills centered on property reassessment reform this past session. Here's where they stand.
