Personal and Home Safety Symposium
Election Night, November 8, 6 – 7 PM
Country Club of Landfall Nicklaus Ballroom

Need temporary relief from election fatigue? Join us Tuesday night, November 8 at CCL at 6pm and get tips from the pros on family and personal safety. Bring the kids, grandkids, neighbors, friends – we all need to know how to reduce risks of bad things happening!

This Safety Symposium is being coordinated by Landfall CERT.

Wilmington Police Department, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department, Wilmington Fire Department and NHRMC Emergency Medical Services will address the topic of personal safety from several different angles and answer any questions on the topics.

They will also inform us about the free classes/courses they offer and how we can help them by better helping ourselves in a true emergency . . things we can do now to help our family when something bad happens.

The first responders will bring safety literature and have sign up sheets for their classes the night of the symposium. Landfall CERT will offer safety items for donations as well.

This Symposium provides information, tips, and insights into the life skills we and our families can benefit from now and tomorrow to help reduce the daily risks our world presents to us. Part of Landfall CERT’s Mission is to make Landfall a safer community – please help us achieve that goal by attending this brief but important meeting. It could help all of us prevent accidents and perhaps save a life.

The next CERT training class is scheduled for September. Membership in Landfall CERT now requires enrolling in a training class during the first year of membership.

Additionally, our Landfall CERT organization requires taking First Aid & CPR training during the first year, and keeping current with both certifications.

Landfall CERT has plans to sponsor one CPR and one FIRST AID training class in mid-October. If you have never had one of these classes, we encourage you to attend; it could save a loved one’s life.

If you are a member of the CERT organization, your certification may need to be renewed. Either way, these classes are an important way to be prepared. For each of these classes, there will be a small course fee which will be announced later.

We know that each of us have busy schedules, so to accommodate that, we plan to offer an evening CPR training class at the COA building in the board room. The class would start at 5:30 and would last a minimum of 2.5 hours. We need to get a preliminary read on how many people would be interested in the evening class. So, if you think you would attend this class, please send a response to CERT Management [email protected].

Landfall CERT is also making plans to sponsor some other Safety Classes to be offered in the next few months. We are planning to have individual presentations by local fire department personnel. Stay tuned for more news.

Finally, the Board of Directors of Landfall CERT is making changes to membership requirements and will be initiating a membership drive. Membership forms will be offered at the First Aid/CPR classes and the Safety Classes. If you want to find out more now about membership in CERT, please contact us at [email protected].

Tornadoes & earthquakes can cause extensive damage and claim countless numbers of injuries and deaths. Warnings to take shelter are broadcast when tornadoes touch down or are likely. Earthquakes strike without warning. Hurricanes?

Hurricanes come with warnings - often giving us days to prepare and plan for the safety of our family and property. But do we? Do we have a plan of action, have we accumulated supplies and necessities, are we really prepared...now?

Landfall families have an opportunity Tuesday, June 7 at 6 pm in the CCL ballroom to hear from local experts in their fields about this year's hurricane season.

It is important for all of us to to understand as much as we can about hurricanes, watches and warnings, and the impact of forceful winds, rain, and flooding.

We can't do anything to alter the path of an approaching storm, but we can prepare well in advance. We can do what is necessary to safeguard our loved ones and property not just before, but during and after a hurricane.

Join us Tuesday at 6 pm and invest an hour which promises to be educational, informative, and worthwhile.

Gov. Pat McCrory has declared this Hurricane Preparedness Week (beginning May 16) in North Carolina..

The North Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through the end of November but storms have affected the state as early as May, such as Tropical Storm Ana last year.

The peak hurricane season along the North Carolina coast is from mid-August through the middle of October.

The governor said in a release that people need to get hurricane kits prepared with enough food and water for three to five days, first-aid kits and clothes and personal items.

Also make sure you have enough medicine and have cash, your checkbook and insurance papers.

Landfall residents: Be sure to attend the Landfall CERT Hurricane Preparedness meeting on June 7 at 6 pm at the CCL club for specific information which affects you and your families.

Being informed & aware is the first step, being prepared, the second, knowing what to do and when to put your plan into action may be the most important. Join us for an evening of brief presentations, discussions, and Q&A.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
hosted by Landfall CERT
Tuesday, June 7, 6 – 7 PM at the CCL Ballroom.

June is the beginning of hurricane season and if you are new to the area or a long-time resident, you don’t want to miss this meeting.

Landfall CERT is planning to invite a local meteorologist, Wilmington Fire Department, and an EMS officer from New Hanover Regional Medical Center to speak about their procedures during a hurricane event.

In addition, Landfall Security and the COA Director of Maintenance will provide you with important information about what they do here in Landfall if we encounter a hurricane.
Learn what you need to do before, during and after a hurricane event. Find out what supplies you need to have and how to put together an emergency plan for you and your family.

Get educated on what you should do inside your home to reduce the risk of fires and what actions you should take to survive in your home without power, lights and air conditioning.

Also, please be aware that Landfall CERT has adopted new calendar dates for its community events and will not be producing SpringFest/Car Show this year. Instead, the board has decided to run the event every other year, beginning in 2017.
