We Can End Digital Victim-Blaming: How to Support Survivors of Sexual Violence Online

As a community, we can work to eliminate violence by publicly supporting victims, sharing educational information about sexual assault, and taking a stand against victim-blaming comments. Together, we can make our online spaces safer and more supportive. #tccjusttryingtohelpsomekids #survivors

Culture change starts with small, positive actions — like taking a stand against online victim-blaming.

#MythVsFact, we want to tackle a HUGE misconception about sexual violence. Only 2-8% of rapes are falsely reported, which is the same as other reported felonies. Survivors are NOT making their experiences up; it is myths and misconceptions like these that can discourage and create challenges for survivors coming forward. The Mama Bear Effect

The Mama Bear Effect

💚Protective parents are also victimized when a sexual predator abuses their child. Their trust, friendship, familial love... is exploited and manipulated.

💚 The ways and methods of committing sexual abuse are varied and numerous, the effect on children can range from self blame, confusion, fear of breaking apart a family. to complete memory blocking.

💚 A child not telling right away is not a symptom of insufficient parenting, but rather the complexities of childhood trauma and the issues of how our world is combating child sexual abuse.

💚 It is 2021 and there is still no nationally implemented program to educate parents, children and caregivers or require even the most basic safety standards in schools and organizations that serve children.

💚 We are the change - YOU are the chance your family, friends, and community need. You have the knowledge of this epidemic that so many are still ignorant of its reality.

💚 Knowledge is power and our voices are the strongest weapon that can put be to use today to protect the children you know.

💚 Be loud, so that every child, survivor and protective parent knows where you stand and that there are people fighting for them.

Our Story

In 2000, the Carousel Center was founded, and in 2015 became Nationally-Accredited Child Advocacy Center through the National Children’s Alliance - the only one in our region.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Wilmington Junior League, NHRMC Emergency Department, Departments of Social Services, Offices of the District Attorneys, and the Rape Crisis Center, the Carousel Center was developed out of a desire to protect abused children from being further traumatized during the process of the investigation and prosecution of their cases.

Although we work with children who have been abused, neglected and often hurt in unimaginable and unspeakable ways, our message is one of healing, hope and resiliency. Instead of focusing on the pain and despair caused by the trauma, we help children find their voices to share their stories to stop the abuse. We also help them find their inner strength and courage to face the abuse not as victims, but as survivors.

Our efforts focus on creating the most child-focused approach to the investigation, prosecution and treatment of child abuse. The facility and services are specifically designed to create an atmosphere that is private, safe and child-friendly. We work side by side with local law enforcement, prosecutors, child protective service workers, and treatment providers to provide a team of professionals investigating child abuse in an efficient and effective way that not only supports and advocates for the rights of the child, but also has the added benefit of a cost savings to the community.
