Fast Fact Friday...“I believe you”
It can be difficult for children to come forward and disclose abuse. They may feel ashamed or guilty, worried they will not be believed, or worried they will be blamed. Letting a child know you believe them is a crucial first step in their healing process.

In honor of October being Latinx Heritage Month, the Carousel Center is highlighting one of our own team members, Franchesca Ramirez, or better known as Frannie. Frannie has worked as our Family Advocacy Supervisor for 3 years. She first heard about the Carousel Center while working at The Oaks at New Hanover Regional Medical Center (now known as Behavioral Health Hospital) when a fellow doctor mentioned TCC needed someone who could speak Spanish. Growing up in a bilingual household with her parents who are originally from Cuba, Frannie decided she’d be a perfect fit for the job and we couldn’t have agreed more. “I am so happy to be here and I am so passionate about it…if I could take all the kids home with me I would.” Joked Frannie. She’s become quite passionate about having the Hispanic population in our community heard and advocated for at the Carousel Center. Her teammates thinks she is pretty amazing too! #tccjusttryingtohelpsomekids #carouselcenter

Our Story

In 2000, the Carousel Center was founded, and in 2015 became Nationally-Accredited Child Advocacy Center through the National Children’s Alliance - the only one in our region.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Wilmington Junior League, NHRMC Emergency Department, Departments of Social Services, Offices of the District Attorneys, and the Rape Crisis Center, the Carousel Center was developed out of a desire to protect abused children from being further traumatized during the process of the investigation and prosecution of their cases.

Although we work with children who have been abused, neglected and often hurt in unimaginable and unspeakable ways, our message is one of healing, hope and resiliency. Instead of focusing on the pain and despair caused by the trauma, we help children find their voices to share their stories to stop the abuse. We also help them find their inner strength and courage to face the abuse not as victims, but as survivors.

Our efforts focus on creating the most child-focused approach to the investigation, prosecution and treatment of child abuse. The facility and services are specifically designed to create an atmosphere that is private, safe and child-friendly. We work side by side with local law enforcement, prosecutors, child protective service workers, and treatment providers to provide a team of professionals investigating child abuse in an efficient and effective way that not only supports and advocates for the rights of the child, but also has the added benefit of a cost savings to the community.
