Raise a joyful giver. Sharing the experience of giving can be the most rewarding present you give your child this holiday season.
Giving gives children a sense of self-esteem and pride. Teach children the value of giving in a season when they're surrounded by messages about getting: here are five small ways to start:
Start when kids are young. Children are happy to bake cookies for a friend, but will end up wanting to keep them for themselves. Plan for this by baking enough to keep and share. Teach that You Don't Need Money to Give: Help them make gift certificates good for "one free car wash" or "breakfast in bed" that he can give to others in the family and then redeem. Involve Child in Selecting the Gift: Collect all the requests mailed to you during this giving season, set a budget and then discuss each of the requests. Decide together what organization meet your values and interests. Personalize Giving: Have a family conversation about what you're thankful for. That will help your child realize that what she values may be missing in other people's lives. Start a tradition in which family members set aside one of their gifts to give to someone less fortunate. Start a Giving Jar At the beginning of the New Year start a giving box/jar, add change to the jar regularly, and end of the year contribute to someone needy or use for your contributions.
Kids who volunteer are more likely to have a greater respect for others, leadership skills, and an understanding of citizenship that can carry over into adulthood.
Be a Role Model: There are many volunteer opportunities for families. Gather small-size toiletries, such as toothpaste and shampoo, and pack them in decorated gift bags to take to a homeless shelter. Ask your child if he'll help you baby-sit for a neighbor's toddler so she can do shopping or help you rake the leaves for an elder friend. Find someone without a family - a soldier, distant relative, a elderly person in a nursing home - write them a letter/send a card to make the person feel remembered and included during the holiday.
Giving is addictive. It gets in your blood. It makes you realize that you and your actions matter. www.carouselcenter.org/donate/

Madison's father began assaulting her when she was just six years old. When she was 16, she reported the abuse to the authorities, only to recant when her father threatened that her actions would leave her family destitute and homeless.
As an adult, Madison revived her case, realizing her silence allowed her father the opportunity to abuse more children. She worked with local law enforcement and the district attorney’s office to reinstate the charges. In late 2018, her father pled guilty, has been incarcerated, and must register as a s*x offender upon release.
Madison’s strength and perseverance helped bring her abuser to justice, but she said it would have been so much easier if she had had the Carousel Center on her side when she was a young, frightened teen bullied into denying her abuse.
Madison shared her story at our Heart of the Matter luncheon in 2019, she hopes that by sharing her story, you will make a gift to provide superior forensic investigative services, and trauma therapy for child victims of s*xual and physical abuse in the Cape Fear area. #tccjusttryingtohelpsomekids www.carouselcenter.org/donate/

Did you know you can support TCC by shopping on Amazon? It's really that easy!
Here's how to set it up through the Amazon app:
1. Open the Amazon app and find ’Settings’ in the main menu (☰)
2. Tap on 'AmazonSmile' and 'Get Started'
3. Browse charities and search "The Carousel Center" and you'll find us! (Make sure it says Wilmington, NC)
4. Confirm us as your charity and follow the in-app instructions and you are good to go!
Once you set up AmazonSmile and choose TCC as your charity, Amazon donates 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible AmazonSmile to the museum. This does not increase your price at all! Thanks!

Without effective therapeutic intervention, many child victims of abuse will suffer ongoing or long-term consequences that may impact them throughout their lifetimes. https://carouselcenter.org/what-we-do/ #tccjustryingtohelpsomekids

Surprises can be a fun experience for everyone like a birthday party or Christmas presents. Secrets can be used as a way for everyone not to know something. If the ‘secret’ is revealed someone could be upset or mad. Perpetrators who are grooming a child may threaten them not to share their secrets. #tccjusttryingtohelpsomekids

Forensic/Medical Evaluations
NC-rostered Child Medical Evaluation professionals perform a complete forensic/medical examination in a nurturing and supportive environment for children who report physical or sexual abuse. The forensic/medical evaluation is assures that evidence is neither missed nor compromised while it is documented for possible prosecution efforts.

Interviews
Specifically trained Child Forensic Interviewers create a safe space to gather the essential abuse event information, while being extremely sensitive to each child's needs. Carousel has non-threatening, designated forensic interview rooms - designed for specific age ranges - with accompanying observation rooms for law enforcement and child protection investigators to view the live interview, and support a "one time/one place" philosophy of interviewing each child. All forensic interviewers are trained to conduct each child interview, with age-appropriate, forensically sound, and non-leading evidence-based protocols, while assisting law enforcement and child protection investigators to set a sound investigative foundation.

Family Advocacy
On-site Family Advocate ensure that children and the non-offending family members are supported through the Child Medical Evaluation process, assist with referrals for on-going care, defining options/next steps, assist with addressing unmet family needs, as well as court accompaniment for future case dispositions.

Child Trauma Therapy
Various types of therapy including traditional talk therapy, art therapy and play therapy are offered at Carousel for children who have experienced sexual/ physical abuse, or other traumatic event. Carousel proudly employs nationally-certified Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) therapists, who utilize this evidence-based treatment to ensure child survivors heal, while having their adult, non-offending caregivers walking the healing journey right beside them all the way. Carousel boasts being 1 of 3 North Carolina Child Advocacy Centers selected to participate in a Duke Endowment/Yale Child Center/National Children's Alliance/Child Advocacy Centers of North Carolina PILOT PROJECT to implement the Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI) treatment model. Both evidence-based treatment models are endorsed to provide the best trauma healing in a structured strategy that allows children to graduate from therapy and move on from their abuse experiences. Each child is assessed for the clinical services needed at the time they present, with the treatment strategy tailored to address their unique needs. As always, appropriate referrals are made to cooperating behavioral health providers, when deemed in the child's/family's best interests.

Our Story

In 2000, the Carousel Center was founded, and in 2015 became Nationally-Accredited Child Advocacy Center through the National Children’s Alliance - the only one in our region.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Wilmington Junior League, NHRMC Emergency Department, Departments of Social Services, Offices of the District Attorneys, and the R**e Crisis Center, the Carousel Center was developed out of a desire to protect abused children from being further traumatized during the process of the investigation and prosecution of their cases.

Although we work with children who have been abused, neglected and often hurt in unimaginable and unspeakable ways, our message is one of healing, hope and resiliency. Instead of focusing on the pain and despair caused by the trauma, we help children find their voices to share their stories to stop the abuse. We also help them find their inner strength and courage to face the abuse not as victims, but as survivors.

Our efforts focus on creating the most child-focused approach to the investigation, prosecution and treatment of child abuse. The facility and services are specifically designed to create an atmosphere that is private, safe and child-friendly. We work side by side with local law enforcement, prosecutors, child protective service workers, and treatment providers to provide a team of professionals investigating child abuse in an efficient and effective way that not only supports and advocates for the rights of the child, but also has the added benefit of a cost savings to the community.
