Parents should never be the last to know what is happening with their own child at school.

Across the country, families are challenging school policies and practices they say allowed schools to withhold important information about their children, including the names and gender identities students were using at school.

Whatever happened to the idea that parents and schools are supposed to be partners?

Parents aren't obstacles to their children's education. They are their children's first and most important advocates.

And this is exactly why who serves on your local school board matters.

We need school board members who believe:

• Parents have a right to know what is happening with their children
• Schools should work with families, not around them
• Transparency builds trust; secrecy destroys it
• Parents should have a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their children
• The wellbeing and education of students must come before political or ideological agendas

These decisions aren't happening somewhere far away. Policies governing parental notification, curriculum, student privacy, and the relationship between schools and families are shaped by the people we elect to lead our school systems.

Know who sits on your school board. Know what they support. Know how they vote.

Because parental rights shouldn't end at the schoolhouse door.

School board elections matter more than most people realize.

In Wake County, parents are raising concerns after the district hired a transgender music teacher at an elementary school. Students are being asked to address the biologically male teacher as “Ms.,” leaving some parents uncomfortable and questioning whether their rights, and their ability to make decisions about what their children are exposed to at school, are being respected.

When parents asked for their children to be placed in a different classroom, they say they were told no. According to WRAL, one school board member even suggested that parents who remain uncomfortable with the situation have other options, including private school or homeschooling.

Regardless of where you live, this should serve as an important reminder:

The people we elect to our school boards make decisions that directly affect our children, our families, and the role parents have in their education.

Parents should not have to fight to be heard when it comes to their own children.

We need school board members who:

• Put the education and well being of children first
• Respect parents as the primary decision makers for their children
• Believe in transparency between schools and families
• Take parental concerns seriously, even when those concerns are uncomfortable or unpopular
• Understand that protecting parental rights is part of serving the community

School boards aren't just administrative bodies. They help determine the policies, priorities, and culture of our public schools.

Pay attention. Ask questions. Know who is serving on your school board, and vote accordingly.

Our children deserve schools focused on educating them, and parents deserve a meaningful voice in the decisions that affect them.

📚 Leadership isn't just about talking about education—it's about planning for it.

One thing that deserves recognition is the way the New Hanover County Board of Education and the New Hanover County Board of County Commissioners worked together to develop a thoughtful, long-term plan for our schools.

Rather than waiting until problems became emergencies, they evaluated facility needs across the district, prioritized the most critical projects, and worked to maximize every available dollar. That collaborative effort also secured a $116 million commitment from the New Hanover County Endowment, helping reduce the burden on taxpayers while addressing important school infrastructure needs.

Whether you ultimately support the bond or not, this is what responsible local leadership looks like:

✅ Working together across elected boards
✅ Planning ahead instead of reacting to crises
✅ Leveraging outside funding to reduce taxpayer costs
✅ Trusting voters to make the final decision

Responsible leadership means planning ahead, working together, and making wise investments in our community. That's exactly what we should expect from every elected official—whether they serve on the Board of Education or the Board of County Commissioners.

🇺🇸 Motivation Monday | Answering the Call to Serve

Leadership doesn’t always mean staying in the same place. Sometimes it means stepping into a greater assignment.

We celebrate John James and Byron Donalds as they pursue the governorships of Michigan and Florida; taking their commitment to public service to a new level. Their willingness to step forward is honorable, inspiring, and a powerful example of answering the call to serve.

But there is also a challenge before us.

With all four Black Republicans currently serving in the U.S. House, Byron Donalds, John James, Wesley Hunt, and Burgess Owens, leaving their House seats, the Republican Party faces a historic opportunity and an urgent need: we need more Black conservative voices willing to step up and run for Congress.

Frederick Douglass didn't wait for someone else to answer the call. He stepped forward, spoke boldly, and worked tirelessly to shape the nation he believed America could become.

So who will be next?

This is our Motivation Monday reminder: don't just talk about change...be willing to serve! Run. Lead. Engage. Make your voice count.

The future needs leaders who are ready to answer the call. 🇺🇸
