Pride Month and the People Who Served in Silence

LGBTQ Americans have defended this country since before it had a name for them. They flew the missions, stood the watches, manned the guns, and carried the wounded. Many did it knowing that if the truth came out, the same nation they protected would discharge them in disgrace.

Harvey Milk served as a Navy diving officer during the Korean War. His commanding officer called him outstanding. The Navy forced him out in 1955 once it questioned his sexual orientation, and he left with a discharge that branded a patriot as a problem. He went on to become one of the first openly gay elected officials in America before he was assassinated for it. He was wearing his Navy diver belt buckle the day he was killed.

Leonard Matlovich earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star in Vietnam. He stepped on a land mine serving a country that would later throw him out for who he loved. The epitaph he chose says it plainly. The military gave him a medal for killing a man and a discharge for loving one.

For decades the policy was to look away or to purge. Don't Ask, Don't Tell ended more than thirteen thousand careers before Congress repealed it in 2011. Every one of those discharges cost the country a trained, willing, capable defender. None of it made us safer. It only made us smaller.

We are not telling this history because it is finished. We are telling it because it is repeating. This time last June, the Navy stripped Harvey Milk's name from the ship that honored him, and it timed the insult to Pride Month on purpose. Thousands of transgender service members, people already in uniform, already deployed, already meeting every standard asked of them, are being forced out right now under a policy that mistakes prejudice for readiness.

A country does not strengthen its military by firing the people willing to die for it. Service is service. Courage is courage. The oath does not ask who you love before it asks what you are willing to give.

This Pride Month, the Delaware Democratic Veterans and Military Families Caucus honors every LGBTQ American who has worn the uniform, named and unnamed, remembered and erased. You earned your place. We will not let anyone tell you otherwise.

The new 17% increase in county property taxes is hitting us at the same time as we’re hurting from Delmarva rate hikes and property tax hikes. I’ve heard from far too many seniors who already can’t afford to stay in their own homes after the property reassessment disaster left homeowners on the hook for Amazon’s $2.5M tax cut. I’m fighting for real, permanent relief for working and middle class taxpayers.

FOR SENIORS TURNING 65 BY 7/1/26: Remember to apply for your county property tax break by June 1st. You don’t need to reapply if you were approved last year for the same primary residence. Find all the requirements and how to apply here:

On Memorial Day we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Today I’m thinking back to my grandfathers’ old stories of the service members they served alongside in WWII who gave their lives wearing our nation’s uniform. 🇺🇸

I’ve carried a heavy heart since the moment I received word of the devastating fire at Mother African Union Church.

Please hold the community in your prayers through the long road ahead.

STATEMENT FROM OVERSEER DR. RONALD W. WHITAKER, II, SENIOR PASTOR OF THE HISTORIC MOTHER AFRICAN UNION CHURCH

On May 17, 2026, at approximately 3:00 a.m., a devastating fire consumed the building of our beloved Mother African Union Church. To see a sacred space where generations have wept, rejoiced, worshipped, and praised God suffer such destruction brings an indescribable grief.

However, as scripture reminds us in Matthew 16:18, ‘Upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.’ Today, we weep for the brick and mortar, but we stand firm in the knowledge that the Church is not simply a building. The Church is the people, the spirit, and the unyielding faith of the community.

We want to express our profound gratitude to the brave first responders, firefighters, and emergency personnel who arrived swiftly at the scene on North Franklin Street. Risking their own safety in the dark of the early morning hours, they fought valiantly to contain the blaze. Because of their courage, professionalism, and swift response, no lives were lost, and for that protection, we give God endless praise.

At this time, we are working diligently and cooperatively with local fire officials, law enforcement leaders, and investigators as they work to determine the cause of the fire. We are committed to supporting the investigative process fully and responsibly.

Mother African Union Church carries a rich and sacred history of resilience. Established through the foundational spirit of the independent Black church movement—pioneered right here in Wilmington by the free African American Peter Spencer in 1813—our congregation was born out of a radical pursuit of freedom, dignity, and self-determination. For more than two centuries, through our annual August Quarterly Festival and the Peter Spencer Family Life Foundation, we have stood as a beacon of liberation, faith, and hope. We have weathered the storms of history, and by the grace of God, we will weather this fire as well.

To the Wilmington community, our neighbors, our members, and all those near and far who have reached out: we cannot overexpress our love and heartfelt gratitude to the countless individuals, churches, organizations, civic leaders, nearby cities, and members of the broader community who have already extended prayers, encouragement, and offers of support during this heartbreaking moment. Your compassion has reminded us that we do not stand alone.

While our physical sanctuary has been damaged, our mission remains completely unburned. Our commitment to serving this community, standing for justice, uplifting the vulnerable, and advancing the liberating work of the Gospel remains stronger than ever.

In the days ahead, we will share additional information regarding temporary worship arrangements, community support efforts, and ways individuals may assist as we begin the long road toward healing and rebuilding.

We humbly ask for your continued prayers during this difficult hour. Though grieving, we remain steadfast in faith. We have come this far by faith, and with resilience, unity, and the strength of God, we believe we will rise from these ashes and continue the sacred work entrusted to us.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and remains under active investigation by the Wilmington Fire Marshals Office.

The latest announcement regarding Wilmington’s homelessness crisis leaves more questions than answers. I renew the call for transparency and accountability issued in our open letter to New Castle County elected officials; our requests to directly address homelessness have only grown more urgent.

Happy Mothers Day! My mom is my hero and inspiration every day. She followed her small town dreams (as an 11th generation Delawarean!) to become a doctor and help as many people as she could. Love you Mom!

Our campaign is gaining national attention!

It’s time for state government to put people first and protect our corporate franchise tax revenue (over a third of our state budget).
