President Buu Nygren appoints Mike Henderson as new Director of Navajo Division of Public Safety
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — Mike Henderson has officially assumed the role of Director of the Navajo Division of Public Safety, bringing over 37 years of law enforcement experience on the Navajo Nation.
Mr. Henderson’s appointment begins at 5:01 p.m. today, marking a new chapter for the division as it continues to strengthen public safety efforts across the Navajo Nation.
Henderson’s career began as a police recruit and progressed through various roles, including leadership positions in criminal investigations and as a deputy division director. A retired member of the U.S. Navy Reserve, Henderson deployed four times into combat zones, where he led anti-terrorism task forces and collaborated with military partners worldwide. His military service, combined with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Management from Walden University, provides him with a strategic outlook essential for modern law enforcement leadership.
Under his leadership, Henderson said he his committed to leveraging technology and fostering collaboration with federal, state, and local agencies. He said the importance of the Tribal Community Response Plan (TCRP), describing it as “a living document that we can all continue to improve and adapt through ongoing training and community engagement.”
Henderson also reflected on the legacy of his predecessor, outgoing Division Director Mike Anderson.
“Mike Anderson set a strong foundation with policies that address public safety challenges. I am honored to build upon that work and continue improving the division’s efforts,” Henderson said.
Former Director Mike Anderson, who stepped down for personal and medical reasons, shared his appreciation for Henderson.
“Mike Henderson has the experience, dedication, and understanding of our community’s needs. I am confident he will lead the division forward with integrity and innovation,” Anderson said.
A proud Navajo, Henderson stressed the importance of integrating traditional culture, language, and community values into public safety initiatives.
“My Navajo heritage and community understanding are vital assets,” he said. “I am committed to leading with honor to ensure a safer future for our people.”
Henderson’s appointment marks a significant step forward, aiming to address emerging challenges with culturally informed and innovative solutions.
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said that Mr. Henderson represents a new era of public safety, especially with the implementation of the Tribal Community Response Plan.
“Congratulations to Mr. Henderson on his appointment as the new director for the Navajo Division of Public Safety,” President Nygren said. “He has extensive experience with his skills of being an officer with Navajo Police and in the military.
