Lake County Indiana Health Department

We are going the wrong way, Lake County! The most recent County Metrics keep Lake County in YELLOW, however it went from 1.0 to 1.5 which means we either remain steady, work our way back to BLUE or end up in ORANGE again. Right now, LaPorte County is the only one in the state in ORANGE.

Please do not let up on recommendations of social distancing, mask wearing, event planning, etc. Perhaps some people misunderstood when restrictions were lifted. When the Governor and County Health Officer lifted restrictions, it was not a statement that the pandemic is over.

Regarding vaccination and "what's next" for you, we encourage you to review the latest CDC recommendations at https://buff.ly/3v2PJqt. (This was last updated 04/02/2021, subject to change, but current at this point.)

Schedule your vaccination today, preferably through https://buff.ly/3i8v1zs or by calling 211 or 1-866-211-9966.

Remember, FEMA has a vaccination site distributing the Pfizer vaccine. This is a two-shot process, so it is important you come back for your second shot in a timely manner. This site is at Roosevelt High School, 730 W. 25th Ave, Gary, 46407. To register, go to https://buff.ly/3i8v1zs and click on the “find a vaccination site” link. Then go to Lake County and click on the “FEMA Gary Roosevelt Park VAX” link and make an appointment by filling out the information on the screen. While an appointment is preferred, they have stated they will not turn anyone away. So, don't wait!

I just talked to the engineer again at our Lake County Highway Department. 109th and Colorado will be closed until the 26th to install the new traffic light.

** Merrillville decided to close 101st Avenue at Mississippi today, too (NOT Lake County). They are rebuilding Mississippi at 101st and then will continue north toward 93rd Avenue to continue rebuilding and widening Mississippi.

From Town of Merrillville: "Road Closures!

101st Ave. will be closed to thru traffic between Colorado and Broadway, on or after April 8th, 2021 for reconstruction of the 101st Ave and Mississippi intersection. This closure is anticipated to continue until May 31st (weather permitting).

Mississippi St. will be closed to thru traffic between 93rd Ave on or after April 8, 2021 for the reconstruction of Mississippi St. This closure is anticipated to continue until November 1, 2021(weather permitting)."

I know 117th/113th was very backed up this morning. Try 231 or US 30. Be safe!

Winfield Police Department

The Winfield Police Department is proud to announce the implementation of Project Lifesaver. Project Lifesaver is a 501 (C)(3) community based, public safety, non-profit organization that provides law enforcement, fire/rescue, and caregivers with a program designed to protect, and when necessary, quickly locate individuals with cognitive disorders who are prone to the life threatening behavior of wandering. The organization was founded in 1999 in Chesapeake, Virginia. The necessity of this program was determined through the correlation between cognitive conditions and the act of wandering. With the dramatic increase of cognitive conditions since the inception of the organization, the program has grown from a localized program to a program recognized internationally as a proven and effective method of “bringing loved ones home.”

The method relies on proven radio technology and specially trained search and rescue teams. Citizens enrolled in Project Lifesaver wear a small transmitter on the wrist or ankle that emits an individualized frequency signal. If an enrolled client goes missing, the caregiver notifies their local Project Lifesaver agency, and a trained emergency team responds to the wanderer’s area. The first responders will then use the client’s individualized frequency to locate the position of the individual. The knowledge given from the community policing courses is best applied in this situation because the first responders will know how to best approach the client once found, and allow them to be brought back to safety.

If your loved one resides in Winfield, we encourage you to contact Officer Ryan Helmecy at [email protected] to discuss enrollment. Winfield residents will be enrolled, if they meet the medical requirements, at no cost. Winfield Township residents can then be enrolled at a cost that covers the expense of the transmitter. You may get further information by contacting Officer Helmecy at the email listed.

Superintendent Todd Terrill announced during a Monday night school board meeting the district's new Taft Middle School will be located in Winfield on the corner of Gibson Street and East 121st Avenue.

The school is slated to open in fall 2024.

"The majority of our schools, all with the exception of Jerry Ross and Winfield Elementary, are on the west side of (Interstate) 65," Terrill said. "With the anticipated growth that we have here, we think it is prudent to look at property on the east side of (Interstate) 65."

02/24/2021

Town Of Winfield: "Friday 2/26, there will be tree removal on Grand Blvd. for intersection improvement work. Flagging will be in place for traffic control."
