Blatant Political Favoritism Playing Out in District 21 Races, FOLLOW THE MONEY!
Every election cycle brings a healthy dose of competition, and District 21 is no exception. That is how democracy works. Candidates cast their vision, run on their records, voters get to ask questions, and WE, THE PEOPLE, DECIDE. But what we are seeing play out in District 21 goes beyond the typical politics-as-usual and deserves closer inspection.
This primary season, three of the five candidate forums were hosted by the Central Dakota Republican Women. It should be noted that this is not an affiliate of the federation, and you should also know that this group is registered as a Statewide Political Action Committee with NO BYLAWS OR GUIDELINES to adhere to. It has become increasingly clear through social media, newspaper articles, and now campaign finance reports that this group and its members had their preferred slate of candidates even before the forums even began.
That’s fine, but it matters because when an independent group with PRECONCEIVED BIAS CONTROLS a majority of forums, it SHAPES what voters HEAR and DON'T HEAR. BE CAREFUL... The TOPICS DISCUSSED, THE QUESTIONS ASKED, and THE TONE can all reflect those preferences. So if you attended one of these and wondered why CERTAIN TOPICS ARE CONTINUALLY DISCUSSED AND OTHERS PUSHED TO THE SIDE, there could be a reason for that.
There is also a FINANCIAL COMPONENT voters should be aware of. According to the Tripp County Republican Meeting Minutes of their February 24 meeting, they agreed to donate $2,000 to a state-wide political action committee called “Land & Legacy,” WHICH IS REGISTERED OUTSIDE OF DISTRICT 21. However, according to that entity's campaign Finance Reports, there is no record of them receiving that money, but it did donate to
a handful of candidates, including $5,000 to Mykala Voita.
This same entity also operates a separate 501(c)(4) that allows it to AVOID DETAILED DISCLOSER REQUIREMENTS and effectively operate as "DARK MONEY" to influence elections. According to their social media, they have been actively running ads in support of their preferred slate of candidates, which includes some from District 21.
So, did the Tripp County Republicans donate to the PAC or the dark-money non-profit? Regardless, once those funds leave the party’s account, there is no guarantee of what they will be used for or against. THINK ABOUT THAT. Whether it was tickets sold to the last Lincoln Day Dinner, auction items, raffles, or just proud Republicans who felt like giving their hard-earned money, contributions are being redirected into broader political efforts to pick winners and losers.
This is exactly why county parties are struggling. People lose trust when this happens.
NONE OF THIS IS ILLEGAL. However, in politics, legality is not the only standard you have to meet. Public perception and ethics should matter. It will give understanding to potential future voting records.
Voters in District 21 deserve to know the blatant bias that has been afoot and how it is SHAPING WHAT THEY SEE AND HEAR, and exactly who is behind it.
The best thing voters can do is GET INFORMED, ask even more QUESTIONS, and LOOK BEYOND THE SURFACE.
WE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO GET OUT AND VOTE, EITHER NOW OR ON JUNE 2ND.
