The Census is coming, and it's important that everyone in Winona County is counted!

Starting now, watch your mail for a postcard or letter for instructions on how to complete the Census. You'll be able to complete it online, over the phone, or by mail.

The Census is just 9 questions that ask for basic information, including your name, where you live, your age, gender, and other details. All information is kept private and confidential.

The Census is conducted every 10 years, and getting an accurate count is critical. The Census count ensures Winona County gets its share of annual money for services and programs. It also determines election districts, gives businesses data on hiring and wages, and much more. It's estimated that each person counted brings up to $2,000 a year into Winona County!

October is Energy Awareness Month: A time to act to save energy, save money

• Set your thermostat as low as is comfortable when you are home. Turn down the temperature about 10 degrees, either manually or via programmable thermostat, when you’re not at home and at night when you go to bed.
• Weather strip and caulk windows and doors to prevent cold outside air from entering your home.
• Seal air leaks around chimneys, vents, pipes and wires. Plugging air leaks is one of the most cost-effective ways to conserve energy and increase comfort.
• Have your furnace or boiler inspected annually to ensure maximum efficiency and safety. Clean or replace furnace filters regularly, as needed. Replace an old furnace with a new high-efficiency model.
• Turn down the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees. Not only will this save energy, it will reduce the risk of scalding.

Winona County’s Invasive Species Eradication Team was out this week, treating a few patches of Japanese Knotweed that have been confirmed in Winona County. This patch was found along Highway 43 right just east of Janet Marie Lane. Japanese Knotweed is flowering now, making it the perfect time to find it on the landscape. Take a close look at these photos – there’s really nothing else like it blooming at this time. This species is a serious invasive, there’s very little of it here in Winona County at present, and we’d like to keep it that way. If you notice what you think is this knotweed anywhere in Winona County, please let us know by emailing the location to [email protected]
